You rarely see ratings done for research. Dr. Blumstein was a phenomenal PI to work with. Truly the best of the best. He's so real and honest with you, he feels more like how a true mentor should lead compared to how undergrads sees doctorates. He may seem blunt at first, but he means well. If you want a true connection to your PI, and someone who will be completely honest all the time with you, he's the guy.
He's going to support you no matter what and will let you loose to doing research on whatever your heart desires, giving recommendations on what research is in need of currently. His lab has some of the smartest, most talented people that I have ever met, so the support that you will get is immaculate. If you start falling behind on work, though, his honesty might sound harsh but it's the truth.
Throughout all the labs that I have worked with, I don't think I've become as close to a PI than him. We had a couple of deadlines come up, and for every one, he would spend HOURS with me. Literal HOURS. If it were for someone else, there's no way I would've gotten that level of support. He truly cares about research and isn't in it for his own benefit. He loves giving everyone the opportunity to thrive.
If he ever reads this, thank you so much for everything. You're seriously someone who isn't talked about enough. Perhaps give teaching lower division classes a shot?
