Dan is the man! Seriously, if you have any doubts about who to take for analysis, take this man. Easily one of the best profs I've had at UCLA. He bends over backwards for his students, and is really amusing and engaging. He also sets clear expectations and gives you all the tools you need to succeed. The only thing he could do better is post lecture notes online. You really have to attend every class because of that.
The homework is a LOT of work every week. Prepare to sit there for several hours just staring at a blank page trying to think of a way to prove something. Or you know, go to office hours like I probably should have done more often. Discussion and office hours will save your life. Tests are challenging as well so study your butt off.
For 131BH. Best professor ever met. He cares about students’ experience and is definitely good at teaching. The workload is not as heavy as 131BH taught by other professors, but due to the nature of the class, you still need to spend a lot of time on the class. Take his classes whenever possible!!!
Out of all the math classes I've taken at UCLA, I feel like 131B is the hardest and I got the worst grade ever rip. The class focuses mainly on set theories. Professor Hoff is really good at teaching and explaining theories, but his homework and tests are really hard in my opinion. It takes me forever to do the homework. Because of the pandemic, our final was a 24-hour take-home final and I really think I spent 12+ hours on the test. So if you really enjoy a challenging course then this is definitely for you! Plus Professor Hoff is really passionate about math and I always find that inspiring taking a class with a professor like him. I would recommend taking the class but make sure to put A LOT OF effort!
Professor Hoff is one of the best professors I have encountered at UCLA. He is very clear, and his class is very easy to follow. Homework is very reasonable and doable, and I think it is good practice for the course materials. He really cares about students. I can tell his passion of math too. Midterms are fair and final is a little difficult but considering it's a difficult class I would say the difficulty level of his exams are reasonable. Take Professor Hoff if you can, and you will enjoy his class!
