Quarter: Spring 2020
Grade: A+

I took this class online because of COVID-19. Professor Scorza was engaging in lectures. We practiced meditation during every session. However, it is not an 'easy A.' You must put in a lot of work for the assignments. There were 4 weekly logs, 4 quizzes, a presentation, a midterm paper (5-8 pages), and a final paper (10-15 pages). A LOT OF WORK. Plus participation in the discussion forum is required and attendance is mandatory. If you like professors who offer extra credit, this professor offers 3 extra credit points for writing a summary on a ted talk, attending a talk, and going to office hours one time. The topics are really interesting and prove to be introspective. I learned so much about myself. Also, shoutout to Luis, my TA. He was so kind and helpful.

This class was really enjoyable and I learned a lot of skills that I think will help me for a long time to come. I'd highly recommend this for a GE! Had a very reasonable workload (4 quizzes, 1 presentation, 2 papers). Lectures were funny and entertaining.

Selling the Course Reader with detailed notes for each of the readings ($150, make an offer). Text me **********

"Life Skills for College Students" as a course title is very misleading. Whatever you think you'll learn in this "life skills" class (whatever you think life skills is), you won't. This class is more about dealing with stress, yourself, and relationships. In my experience, this class was my most stressful class out of my other fall quarter classes. I DON"T RECOMMEND TAKING THIS CLASS!! IT IS NOT AN EASY A!!! This class is mentally exhausting and I would never take it again.

First, you have to do 4 experience logs (20% of grade) every other week, where the professor wants you to talking about 3 stressful experiences you have every two weeks (it's like the professor wants you to be severely stressed every week, so you can talk about it & it can't be the same or similar stressful situation), apart from other things (Note: This assignment is very time consuming and mentally exhausting in itself!(even the TA said it))

His curriculum is based on his preliminary $100 textbook ( https://store.cognella.com/84040-1a-001 ), which I wouldn't classify as a textbook, it's more like a novel. The textbook is accessible through this Canvas site and it's not a PDF, readable (OCR) or downloadable. As for class lectures, the professor uses slides which are not accessible at all, he doesn't post them anywhere and he doesn't allow you to take pictures of the slides either (and some things (like charts) on the slides are on the test, which are not in his textbook)

HIS TESTS ARE EXTREMELY STRESSFUL AND DIFFICULT (there were supposed to be 4 tests, but ended up being 3 because the professor didn't plan out his time over 10 weeks; they're 15% of grade), the tests also requires Lockdown Browser (every test is 5 points total with 12-14 questions which are 0.25, 0.5, or 1.0 point each). There are study guides for the tests, which he thinks is helpful (they aren't). Participation (20% of grade) is a major part of the course, even though no one in my course did it, maybe 2 of the same people participated every time.

Class is in-person and never on Zoom (he doesn't like Zoom) and we meditate every class for 10-15 minutes and you can't come in the class during that time (if you come in late), you have to wait until meditation is done. He takes attendance through name tags that you make on the first day and requires you to put them in front of you so he can call on you anytime during the lecture. If you don't take the name tag at the beginning of class, then you are absent.

There are "Learning Assignments" (30% of grade), one is a powerpoint presentation and the other is a paper, both are 15 points each. There is also a 12 page Final Paper (15% of grade), reflecting on your time in the class, spilt up into 3 parts, need min of 7 sources from his textbook.

As for the professor and TA's...the professor is an a****** and isn't very helpful...the TA's are sort of helpful (it really depends on who your TA is...).

It’s a good class if you’re looking for upper div credits. Professor expects a lot of participation ranging from weekly discussion boards to speaking in class. Work is easy but time consuming. I didn’t read more than 1 article of reading assignments for this class so you can get away without doing the reading as long as you listen to the lectures. Class is very personal and will ask you to share private details of your life when doing your assignments, presentation, and final 10 page reflection essay (easier than it sounds). The one quiz we had was tough since the professor wouldn’t give us a study guide so I recommend reviewing material regularly in the course. Take this class if you don’t mind busy work and need the credits.

Honestly really great, applicable class. All of the lectures are really interesting and engaging. Because of covid, we don't have to buy the course reader, but when you go back in person it is def needed. If you do all of the course readings for the class before they vary from 3-6 readings. It isn't necessary to read all of them before the class but it helps with breakout rooms or with your projects. The class was a lot of busy work needless to say, but it was graded very fairly.
The breakdown of the class is:
-Participation 20%
- x4 Experience logs 20%
-Learning assignment 1 (presentation) 15%
-Learning assignment 2 (paper) 15%
-Quiz 15%
-Final paper 15%

I wish I could take every class with Dr. Scorza!! He's so understanding, funny, and engaging! There was a short, easy 5 min presentation you give to a small group, 2 papers (i think one was about 5 pages and the final was about 10-12), and 1 quiz. I am also terrible when it comes to writing but I got A's on both. You learn so much about yourself and others and how to handle stress, relationships, and your identity. This was during COVID/Zoom so your camera had to be on a participation mattered. Such a fun and chill class I HIGHLY recommend!
