Prof Jaurretche is an incredible teacher! While in her class, I learned a lot about the history of Los Angeles and the LA river, which was a great introduction to the city. She assigns multiple readings each week but only requires that you buy one or two books, as she posts the PDFs online. The final project is based on some part of LA's history that you connect with. Based on the topic you chose, you are grouped into teams and engage with artifacts from UCLA's historical collection to create a "visual map" of LA. I always enjoyed going to Prof Jaurretche's class and seeing her around campus. She is very welcoming in office hours and wants to help in whatever way she can!

I absolutely loved taking this class with Professor Jaurretche. She posts all the materials to CCLE so you don't have to worry about buying anything. She always kept the students in her best interest and provided really engaging discussions about the texts we read. She grades the first two essays conference style, meaning you schedule an appointment and she grades it right in front of you. I'd say that was pretty scary, but she is a very fair grader. I would highly recommend her to anyone and would absolutely take the class again.

Professor Jaurretche is a great professor. Coming into college as a freshman and being worried about my writing skills, she made the class and the art of writing fun and easy. Definitely would recommend taking her. Selling "The Big Sleep". Txt msg me at **********. If you think I already sold it, I probably still have it, so shoot me a message.

She gave us a couple papers and a small group project so overall it was an easy class. She's a very nice professor and is just really interested in the topics/books she lectures about. I have always hated English classes but this was a very easy A for me.

Professor Jaurretche is one of my favorite professors ever at UCLA. She is super sweet and dedicated to making sure you understand what she teaches. Her class was on "Los Angeles" and I found it to be super interesting. She is very particular about what she wants in her writing. She wants very concise writing--if you can say it shorter, do it. She is very nit-picky on certain phrases and clichés, so take not on what those are in the first couple of classes. Overall she's a super sweet professor who makes her class super fun.

Disclaimer: I only had this class for a week, so please do not choose/drop this class based on my review.

EngComp3 classes are very very flexible in terms of the theme, and the professor has complete discretion to choose how to interpret and utilize the theme of the class. Professor Jaurretche based the class on LA's physical environment and geography. It took me just a few classes to understand how geography-intensive this class was, and that was a straight red flag because I hate geography.

The readings for the class are from the mid and late 90's and delve into detailed and complex geographical descriptions. Since the response papers are supposed to build on the readings, it is impossible to get through this class unless you can tolerate geography.

Professor Jaurretche does seem extremely sweet and helpful, which I presume also means leniency in grading. However, she is often slow and sometimes dry in her lectures. ONLY take this class if you can survive intensive geography.

The amount of reading Professor Jaurretche assigned for this class for absolutely insane. I would find it hard to believe that anyone is the class was able to complete all the readings in full (and she expected you to read them twice no less).

They also made no sense, we were skipping around between authors with no connection (or a rough connection) and I was often really lost between lectures as she provided little to no background info on the works or the genre or literary eras we were covering.

She wasn't terrible, she provided really in-depth lectures on literary style and techniques, but the 10 series, especially 10C should really have a focus on contextualizing pieces of literature and she ultimately failed entirely to do so, really just giving us a historical overview on Ireland in the 19th century.

Also, her essay feedback is legitimately awful. She gave me a B on my paper with no comments other than "I thought this was well-written and well-organized, but this is not the argument I would have made," which is completely antithetical to the goals of literary analysis.

Would highly recommend not taking a 10 series class with her, but maybe a writing class would be okay.
