Professor Claire is the GOAT!! I loved Professor Claire and this course in general, and this is coming from someone who is not a linguistics major and was simply taking this class as a GE. There was roughly one homework each week, one midterm, and one final. I found the lectures and slides to be very helpful. Between the lecture slides and notes/practice problems posted to CCLE, I was able to get through each homework relatively easily. Claire gave very nice and engaging lectures, making the two-ish-hour lectures fly by. We were given 24 hours for our midterm and a WHOLE WEEK (!!) to complete our final exam, which was amazing and allowed me to do well on exams relatively easily. Overall, the material really resonated with me (basically math with sounds (?) is how I'd describe it), I learned something completely new that I had no knowledge of before, and found this course to be low-stress and relatively easy compared to my other classes, so it was a really nice GE in my opinion. 10/10 would recommend!
This class for what its worth is okay. Took it as a GE and at first it was intimidating because Ling majors said this was the hardest class to take. As someone with no prior knowledge of linguistics this class is neither the best nor the worst. Professor is actually very easy going and explains concepts very well. Additionally she's very engaging and attentive with students in class .
Class consists of weekly homework, a midterm, and a final. Professor this year was very accommodating and instead of having a fixed time to do tests was lenient and gave us a bigger time frame to just turn it in. But a big note is who your TA is makes a big difference. Each TA has different levels in which they go in depth at the topic at hand. I had Phil and he was probably the worse one so try going for the other two.
Concepts prior to the midterm were fine but those after the midterm start getting a little confusing. Overall Professor is a good lecturer and is very accommodating. I'm sure there are way easier linguistic classes but if you happen to land this one, you're not in terrible hands.
I took this class for my major and it was pretty easy. In lectures Claire would just explain the content from slides and she was always good at explaining concepts. Discussions were not required and I never went because the lectures were usually enough. Homework is worth 50% of your grade and was always manageable- took me on average 1 or 2 hrs a week. One thing is that your TA grades homework and exams, so hope you get a nice TA lol. There was one midterm and final, each worth 25%, and they were very similar to the slides and homework. Overall this class is very manageable and I would recommend it
Dr. Moore-Cantwell is a great professor who clearly knows and loves her subject. There's just one homework assignment a week, all of which is directly correlated to the material and is great practice. She is attentive to her students' needs and appropriately listens to feedback and implements changes as needed (no time limits for the midterm and final in the stress of COVID, etc.) . I would definitely recommend this class!
I came in not knowing what linguistics even was, and I ended up loving this class! Claire teaches in a way that is clear and easy to understand. Discussion was optional, but I found my TA to be SUPER helpful with understanding the homework. The homework usually took me 1-2 hours per week. Midterm and final were in person, but the questions were exactly like the ones in the homework so it wasn't too bad. Overall, it was an interesting, fun, and manageable class.
I loved this class! I had no prior knowledge of linguistics, so it was a bit overwhelming at times -- the lectures are full of information so it's a lot to take in, but the professor explained things very clearly and did many helpful examples/practice problems in lecture. I learned a lot of cool stuff I had never known about before! Also, the professor was very receptive to student feedback -- when we were about to go in-person, she did a poll asking whether students wanted to stay online or go in-person, and most students voted online, so we stayed online. It was great because since the online lectures were recorded, I didn't have to wake up at 7 AM for class. Also, I liked how there was no textbook. All the content was just based on the lectures.
The workload was reasonable; there was one homework a week, and each took me about an hour to do. However, the TA you have matters a lot since TA's grade the homework and some are considerably more lenient than others. I was fortunate enough to have a lenient TA. Also, the late work policy is pretty flexible. You're allowed 5 late days and the lowest homework is dropped. I'd recommend saving your late days and drop for the end of the quarter since that's probably when you'll need them most.
The midterm and final weren't that bad. I liked how you didn't need to memorize much for them; they were more about skills and practical applications than content. This made it so that I didn't need to study as much. The professor herself said that if you do well on the homeworks, you won't need that much outside study for the exams.
Discussion sections were optional. They're good for solidying your knowledge, but I personally didn't find them necessary. I stopped going to discussion after the first week.
Overall, I'd highly recommend this class! After taking this class, I'm excited to take more linguistics courses at UCLA.
This was my first course in the linguistics major and I thought it was fairly easy and approachable. Professor Moore-Cantwell is a generally clear lecturer and the tests were pretty easy. There were weekly homework assignments as well, which were mostly pretty short and easy. Definitely a low stress class, and the material was pretty interesting as well.
I'm a linguistics major so I had to take this class as a pre-req, but I went in knowing absolutely nothing about linguistics. It was still a pretty easy class and very manageable given that we only had one homework assigned to us a week. Though the course was online, we had our exams in person. If you could do the homework, then the exams should be easy.
I like this class a lot! It's definitely good when you have a strong-ish basis in general linguistic concepts, but even if you've forgotten things from LING 1 or 20, Prof. Moore-Cantwell is great at explaining complicated topics. I enjoyed the things we learned, and the homework was always very related to lecture, so as long as you're paying attention the class is nice to get through. In addition, there's a final paper where you do some phonological research of your own, but the teaching team is all there to help you and make sure you're on the right track so it's really quite interesting and simple. Would take again!
