I hardly ever leave reviews for professors or classes (or anything really, restaurants, etc.) but I really felt inclined to write this review for Professor Sangalang. For a lack of a better way to phrase it, Professor Sangalang is just absolutely a wonderful, incredible, amazing professor and human being. It's been a while since my last encounter with an educator that made me feel so grateful to have taken their class like Professor Sangalang did. She is extremely accommodating and truly cares about her students--you can tell from just having a brief interaction with her! I truly believe that the world would be a much better place if we had more educators and people like her in this world :)
This is one of my favorite classes I've ever taken at UCLA solely because of Professor Sangalang. She is absolutely INCREDIBLE- extremely accommodating (trigger warnings, extensions, even not mandating attendance in class was so helpful as someone with a chronic illness who physically cannot come to class all the time). I learned about some really interesting topics in healthcare that directly related to real world issues, something that made my education feel relevant. Her powerpoints were very clear, she explains topics very thoroughly, and encourages participation. I WANTED to genuinely come to class every week and even looked forward to it.
WORKLOAD:
The workload was not bad AT ALL for this class. We had one reflection essay due at the start of the quarter (super easy) and then online quizzes every week to keep us accountable for doing the readings. The quizzes were very easy as long as you skimmed the readings, and worse comes to worse during the quiz you can have the readings open and find the answers. We also had a group presentation at the end of the quarter which was alright- it was not too difficult but did require you to put in the time/effort. The final was take home and a series of short essays that took me FOREVER to finish, but they were very very fair.
READINGS
No textbook required for this class, all the readings were on CCLE (which was SO appreciated). The readings took me awhile to get through every week, but I also thoroughly did them, which I HIGHLY recommend because it helped me a lot for the final. I slacked off towards the end of the quarter on the readings and those questions on the final exam took FOREVER, so please don't be like me and stay consistent.
PLEASE take this class, even if you aren't part of the AAPI community. You'll take something away from it. Also go to OH with her, she's incredible!
