Professor Escobedo has been one of the best professors I have ever had the privilege of learning from here at UCLA. She truly cared about her students, not just our learning, but our well-being. She had such a sense of professionalism that you cannot help but feel inspired by her! She consistently challenged us, pushing us to reflect our lived experiences in conjunction with what we were learning in class. She taught us how to advocate for ourselves. She pushed us to be better students each time we met. You can tell Dr. Escobedo really cares about her work and about the students she is teaching. She always made the class engaging, encouraged us to speak up, and overall made the environment exciting each week. She still found ways to maintain her role as our professor but also connect with us on different levels, reminding us that once, she was exactly in our shoes. Dr. Escobedo is a major inspiration, not just as a professor, but as a Latina who has worked to achieve her goals.
The class was made up of a weekly reading facilitation group presentation (~40 min), a midterm examination (a paper we had a week to do), and a final research project (a paper and a presentation). The actual class typically ran for the first 40-50 min as the reading group presentation, a break, and then she would lecture the rest of the lecture (but it was never boring!, she would insert activities here and there for us to actually engage with the material). Overall, she's super cool and I would highly recommend taking her course!
