Winter 2022 - The professor places an emphasis on assisting any and all students, including immigrants, non-native speakers, native speakers, and beginners. Although you would have to have a degree of fluency in understanding basic conversational Vietnamese, he explains everything thoroughly in class, from the words you do not understand, to the meaning of each poem and literature prose. Each class is extremely personable so you will be participating and talking to him and other students regardless. He takes care of his students and works to make sure everyone feels at home and comfortable in his classes.

Winter 2023 - Thay Quyen Di's upper division classes are awesome. In V100B, he teaches about Vietnamese poems. The only two assignments/projects you have to do for the whole quarter are 1 midterm essay, 1 midterm video, 1 final essay, and 1 final video. He does not assign any homework or readings. For the essays, you just have to write 1-2 pages double spaced in Vietnamese about how you like the class so far, or you can write about something you learned. For the videos, you have to create a 10 minute video with your group that is inspired by a poem you learned in class. You can also get away with not attending class regularly since he doesn't dock you off for participation or anything like that. Would highly recommend.

Winter 2023 - Thay Quyen Di's upper division classes are awesome. In V170, he teaches about Vietnamese songs. During lecture, he'll play a song or two and then talk about their lyrics and maybe reminisce about his time in Vietnam before the Vietnam War. Honestly, one of the nicest and thoughtful professors I have ever had. He genuinely cares about all his students, would often bring us food to eat in class and souvenirs he brings back from trips to Vietnam. He's been teaching for a long time, so the man is very wise. The only drawback is that there's a lot of group work (video projects), but still manageable nonetheless since he's an easy grader.
