Great professor. Very approachable and friendly. I know that Mott isn't everyone's cup of tea but I got along with him very well, which made it easy to ask for help when writing my paper. If you're interested in a great seminar, please take English 183C.
If you have the opportunity to take a class with Mott, I would definitely recommend that you take it! Although he is not a traditional lecturer (ie. on the spot discussions, tangents, and scattered notes) Mott really brings out the best in his students. If you are completely type A and need well outlined notes to appreciate course materials you may want to look else where, but if you believe in learning from class discussions and building genuine appreciation for literature then Mott will be a dream. I have taken 2 classes with him and he is a fair and borderline easy grader. I think that some of the negative reviews about his grading style may be from students who thought that they could get away with turning in subpar term papers and presentations based on Mott's lax lecture style. Despite his easygoing nature and class room discussions, Mott does expect English and American Lit majors to turn in thoughtful and well-written papers, but nothing more than the average English professor. I think that if you put in an honest effort to participate in class and write a good paper you will do well (meaning an A). On top of that, Mott is one of the most caring teachers I have met at UCLA and his concern for students is really genuine. Take his class, it will be interesting and pretty easy.
Reading load is more than manageable
Rarely has midterms or finals for his classes
Usually only assigns papers
Participation is important
Great and funny teacher
