As a lecturer: So. boring. I spent most of the lecture focusing on my reading my twitter newsfeed or refreshing my facebook app on my iphone. BUT, I diligently wrote down every word on his slides, and let me say that helps a lot. And you do have to go to every lecture because attendance is mandatory. But it's not bad because you don't have to participate if you don't want to. Midterm: I got 100% on my midterm and I only studied for one day (this isn't the norm for me, I don't normally do that well). His tests are exact representations of his powerpoints. He gives almost a paragraph of text for identifications and asks pretty basic short answer questions, but you need to review those slides very carefully. Sam Sommers as TA: worst. TA. She was absolutely terrible, so avoid her at all costs. I have yet to receive my second paper grade (which I think should be significantly higher than my first) but she was just a beezy about grading and her particular subjectivity was annoying. She was really bad at leading time-worthy discussions, so attending discussions was rough. Overall: Not a bad course. I'm actually enjoying studying for the final because he lays out the information so blatantly (hence why it's boring) that it's easy to remember and make connections.

Out of all the English classes I've taken, this was by FAR the most boring. I went to nearly every lecture and the only way I could get through the class was by being on my computer (much like everyone else). His lectures are extremely dry and the reading material is not interesting. You are graded on attendance, 2 essays, a mid-term and a final. The mid-term and the final aren't too difficult, but make sure that you do the reading. He did e-mail us all the powerpoints to study for finals which was helpful. This is not necessarily an "easy" class, but it wasn't too difficult. It however was a waste of time unless you really enjoy reading 19th century American Lit. I was disappointed that there wasn't really any chance for discussion during class and only a few people talked during the entire quarter. TAKE ANOTHER CLASS if you can.

Looby is a very interesting professor. He's very intelligent, and very friendly. His grading is easier than many professors and TA's; I pulled an A- in this class when I expected probably a B or B-. How boring his lectures are depend on how willing you are to engage in class; if you enjoy speaking and you do the readings, you'll enjoy this. He doesn't penalize for quiet kids, but he does take roll, requiring you to be there. Good teacher for academically minded kids, if you absolutely hate lecture, avoid this professor.
