All I have to say is that I probably didn't learn much in this class. I'm probably really screwed for Econ 101. I passed because he had a fairly generous curve...
He's really nice and has lots of O.H. and he gave a lot of practice problems but his lectures were really boring and he can't really teach. The TA I had was worthless so find a good TA and see them often.
I'd say a lot of mean stuff about how bad he teaches but he's nice and tries hard...he just can't get the material across that well though. Sucks.
I don't really agree with the previous comment. I will say that Hellwig isn't the best at lecturing. His lectures are pretty dirty, but this is Econ what do you expect?
However, Hellwig is excellent at caring about students. He is great during OH, he will explain anything you want. He will have extra OH before exams. He is even cool about meeting you when he doesn't even have OH.
The TAs are also very important. The TAs have different ways of expaining the material, find a good TA.
If you do all the H.W. and the TA practice problems you should do fine in the class. The practice tests Hellwig provides are good for practice, however DON'T expect the actual test to have the same questions just with different numbers. Take him if you are serious about doing the work. Oh, and the book is hard to understand. :(
On the contrary to the statement below, Econ 11 was a very enjoyable class. I think that this past quarter, Professor Hellwig has really eased into his teaching style. He gave a practice midterm and final- both comparable in difficulty and length to the actual exam. The midterm and final did however have questions that you hadn't seen before (but the concept was the same). You are actually tested on your knowledge of the material, not how well you memorize the practice problems. Go to TA sections. The TA's are very familiar with the subject material and can clarify all questions that you may have. Professor Hellwig is also very nice and interested in the feedback students have to give. He is very approachable and teaches the subject fairly well. You have to put effort into this class. It's not easy, but is very manageable. If you study, you will do well. The final course grade breakdown had the top 35% of the class receiving A's. I think that is more than fair for a weeder class.
The review below is a bit harsh. True, Hellwig isn't the best lecturer but his curve is VERY generous esp. for an econ prof. In my class, 19 people received an A+ while 9 people received a C- or below in a class out of approximately 250 students. His exams aren't easy but his grade scale for them are generous. Also, homework is 30% of your grade and most people received an A or A+ on them. Material wise, Econ 11 is dry and a bit difficult. Anyways take Hellwig for Econ 11 if he is teaching, he is a nice man and he tries hard to help out and his grading is generous esp. for an Econ prof.
Although Hellwig appears to be a nice guy who knows what he's talking about, he is terrible at teaching the material. The only reason I got through the class was because of my awesome TA. Do not take his class, because you'll kick yourself for screwing yourself over.
