Beren is fantastic and makes an otherwise difficult class very doable. Weekly problem sets are a light workload. Midterms are generally the same kind of question as psets and worksheets, but slightly harder. He doesn't require you to memorize formulas or constants (although you need to understand when/how to use them).

I took this class in my senior year as an engineering major who hadn't done chem in a while and came in worried I would be very behind everyone else. I found that the class was very manageable and does not require extensive knowledge from 20A other than some basics (Beren even provides review material for you if needed). 10/10 would recommend for this class

Overall a very good class, definitely a lot easier than 20A. Beren's discussion worksheets and homework sets are very similar to the exams. I understood everything well enough and did not need to go into office hours once the entire quarter, but if you're stuck on something then I definitely recommend going. Beren is a great teacher and will do his best to help you understand.

Dr. Beren is an excellent professor and one of the kindest professors I had at UCLA. Tests are very fine and I don’t even feel stressed out at any moment in this class. He himself got the school’s teaching award, so I am absolutely confident in recommending him to everyone!

Beren is probably my favorite professor at UCLA. After taking Baugh for 20A, I was a little disillusioned by chemistry here, but Beren more than made up for that. Beren gave clear and succinct lectures that explained concepts well. He had office hours 4 times a week (where he was helpful and funny) and hosted CNSI tours for students. He knew my name even though I never told him, which was a pleasant surprise. When I came to him after the course had ended to discuss my final grade, he agreed to look at my final and discovered the TAs had misgraded my final exam and changed my final grade accordingly.

Homework is technically graded, but my TA was very lenient when grading it, so it ended up being a free 10% of my grade. Tests were generally reasonable but didn't offer a ton of partial credit. He curves to a B+ average, and I don't know anyone who got below a B (he asked students to come talk to him if they got outside the standard deviation on the midterms).

One thing to worry about is the curve: because people generally do well in his class, every point counts and even getting one point below the mean can put you below the average in the final grading. I got slightly above the mean on both midterms and (originally) one point below the mean on the final, and got a B. There seemed to be a limit on the number of A's given out, so even though he is ~easy~, you can't slack off if you want an A.

My man Beren, loved this guy. Great lectures and all bruincasted as well. Homework not too difficult and he was super helpful in office hours for homework and exam review. Exams not too difficult and practice exams helped. Definitely my favorite professor for prereq math/science classes so far. Curve on exam could have been better, but since everyone does fairly well in his class there isn't much of a curve on your final grade.

Beren is nice

Beren is a the biggest homie in all of the lower division professors.

BEREN IS THE BEST. He really cares about his students. In lectures, he would repeat multiple times to make sure that everyone gets it. If you have questions, go to his office hours. He won't make you feel stupid for asking silly questions. He also makes sure that you are prepared for the exams. The tests can be tricky sometimes because otherwise, everyone in the class gets an A. I looked forward to attending every one of his lectures because they are just good. Overall, I really recommend Beren!

As a person who after Chem 20A dreaded chemistry, Beren made it bearable. Beren is super helpful and I VERY STRONGLY RECOMMEND going to his office hours. His homework is a bit challenging but you can get through it. They are mostly graded based on completion from what I understood so its good to get the practice from them.

His discussions have worksheets to work on which are super helpful because they pertain to the homework. My advice is if you have a question ask it then and there!

I think it is really important to practice with these problems, you need to know when you can use things you have used before like HEY WAIT I can use the ideal gas law! Or OMG WAIT is that K I can use yadda yadda. It'll make sense later.

Beren is a great professor so if you are gonna take this class I highly recommend him and the best of luck to ya!

Christian is a good professor and is extremely helpful and understanding. He curves the class upwards to about 50% A's and 50% everything else (at least according to what he says) which is extremely generous. His lectures are usually pretty good, but they sometimes cover things which are a bit out of scope (those topics are not in tests though). His tests are pretty fair and cover basically what you expect them to cover. There is mandatory homework, but it's not too difficult and is basically graded on completion.
