Steer clear. Lectures not recorded, notes/powerpoint slides not provided (just have to type as fast as possible while she talks), exams not open note (which is not something to typically complain about but considering that notes were never provided, it definitely made studying less effective) cancels class 2-3 times during the quarter, then tests students on lecture material that had not been covered due to class being cancelled.

Additionally, even after telling us the exams were based on stories from 1-2 novels along with lecture material, she will ask us the most random question that one would not imagine merit being asked on an exam, like "what was the author's first job?" and "did this story take place in New Mexico or Albuquerque, New Mexico".

Really ineffective way of testing for literacy and understanding of significance of chicano narrative. Seemed like she was just testing for memory of tiny unimportant details rather than comprehension of the greater historical/cultural context of the story. Determined to take points away, exams inappropriately graded.

Basically useless. Blown away by just how awful this class was. I have never wanted to call a professor a joke until I had Bermudez Castro. UCLA gave her a PhD??????????? If I was the Spanish department I would take that degree back, no way she earned that. Anyways actually hated her as a professor and a person, and I've never once hated a teacher.

I'm not even done with this course, but I've had enough time with this garbage professor to realize that she's some prick with a superiority complex. She constantly feels the need to take out her personal frustrations and failures as a professor on her students. I can't wait to write the final evaluation for the Spanish department to see because I have absolutely nothing positive to say. She actually ruined Chicano narratives for me, considering I loved the texts, studied, reread, and did my best on the midterm and still got a C. Most people didn't seem to do well, but what really is the most frustrating part is that she took over a month to grade a 2-3 page paper and 3 short response questions. She hasn't graded a single thing apart from the midterm and it is week 9, so I really have no clue what is going on or why she's considered competent enough to teach a university course at UCLA. She provided absolutely no feedback or justification for her harsh grading on the short response, and she really took points off of my grade because my essay was too well developed and long. She literally looked for reasons to take points off because of her terrible superiority complex. To add to the flames, she has cancelled class a handful of times and has lectured for probably 2 weeks without her camera on. Please avoid this professor at all costs, I've never written a negative review here on Bruinwalk, I look for the most positive things to say about these professors because I also realize they are struggling during this pandemic. But, she grades as if people actually care about this class and put most, if not all, their time to this course. UCLA please revoke her ability to teach classes, she is at best qualified to teach a high school class. Here lectures are so poor quality and difficult to sit through, which explains why no one participates and no one turns their cameras on. We hate you, Christian! Can't wait to see you burn in hell! <3

I took Dr. Bermúdez for another class last year and she was honestly very knowledgeable and understanding. She also provided a lot of feedback in our essays and my writing really did improve after taking her class. I also just want to say to the really hateful person below that you never know what someone else is going through, professors are human beings as well. You would think that students could give their TA's/professors the benefit of the doubt considering that they are also going through a pandemic, not just us. But some people are just entitled pricks I guess

Learned nothing, she's pathetic and I absolutely despised her awful course. Not only is her teaching stale, unoriginal, uninspiring, and boring, but she also doesn't know how to appropriately grade anything. I looked at the grade distribution from Winter 2021 vs. Fall 2018, and it looks like she literally took the death in her family out on all of us. How does the class goes from getting almost all A's to mostly B+'s/B's? I kid you not for the original grade distribution of the midterm 1 person got an A and 1 person got a B, everyone else got C or lower. This is a reflection of her character considering she was incredibly unaccommodating or helpful during this pandemic, and instead aided us as little as possible-- giving as little direction as possible along the way. Not only did she refuse to record lectures, but she would not provide us with slides or attempt to help students struggling to attend classes. What makes this even worse (especially during a pandemic) is that the midterm and final had many questions based on content that she did not cover due to cancelling class. However, she did not give us even the slides to allow us to cover the material ourselves, instead simply testing us on content that she never actually covered in the course. Lastly, in relation to her teaching (or lack thereof) she went a few weeks without her camera on, which was incredibly ineffective and made it so not one felt the need to participate.

She graded the free response questions on the midterm unreasonably difficult, asked obscure multiple choice questions that don't prove any knowledge regarding Chicano narratives, rather the minuscule details that will certainly drop your grade. In addition to grading harshly on the FRQ's (giving me 7/10, 7/10, and 5/10), she did not provide any comments or feedback on how to improve. She gave feedback for one essay the entire quarter, absolutely no other feedback from this professor.

It is hilarious how she said to us the midterm and final were going to be relatively simple and designed to make the course easier for us, but then they were literally the hardest I've taken in the Spanish minor. This is because of the irrelevant and tiny details that she tests on rather than important themes/analysis. She chose to grade literally only those two exams for our final course grade, and didn't like essays because they took up too much of her time. So, for the final, she changed the weighted grade distribution (once again saying this will help our grades) and turned the final essay to a presentation. This was clearly to save her time, effort, and justify giving us absolutely no feedback on the final. Our grades were so bad that she gave us +2 extra credit points to the midterm at the end of the quarter. No, not 2% to our final grade, just two points towards the midterm category. She said, ONCE AGAIN, this was intended to help our grade, but literally made absolutely no difference at the end. Her lectures were genuinely low-grade/substandard, and it's reflected not only in the exam scores, but also the absolute lack of participation in the course. We had a groupme where we all just roasted her because of how awful she was as a professor/human being. We loved to participate in hating on her online, but once she asked questions in discussion absolutely nothing but crickets.

I despise this woman, especially because she grades so much more difficult than actual professors/tenure-track faculty. I received an A+ in Span 27, 119, and 120, but a B+ in her Chicano Narrative course-- a class not even conducted in Spanish. What a sad excuse of a human being this woman is. It's obvious she has something to prove, and I wish any other professor would have taught this course, instead of this PhD graduate with no prospects. Take an emergency leave, Christian, instead of subjecting us to your horrendous lectures and taking your frustrations out on our grades. I hope UCLA reconsiders her ability to teach and continue at the university. Unprofessional and unqualified to say the least.
