The grade breakdown for my quarter was as follows:
10 percent: Participation (attend 8/10 discussion sections)
20 percent: Essays (9 total with 2 dropped)
20 percent: Quizzes (10 total with 2 dropped, but 3 got dropped because I think a bunch of people complained about the way quizzes were scored)
20 percent: Final Paper
30 percent: Final Exam (50 questions and 5 extra credit questions)
The final exam was really easy (a lot easier than the quizzes), and only covered application of general concepts, definitions, etc. The final paper involved comparing your native language and a second language you had exposure to, and the rubric for it is pretty straight forward (but not sure if the grading will accurately follow it since haven't received the rubric yet), The quizzes and essays are what most people had problems with from what I can see from other reviews. The quizzes are mostly questions pulled from the online recorded lectures, but some involve application of concepts, and the scoring was a bit odd for them (ex. selecting 3 answers, but getting 1 wrong resulted in you only getting 1/3 credit for the question). Acing the quizzes is doable if you watch the lectures and have a TA that is willing to help during discussion. As for essays, it is largely dependent on what TA you get. In my case, my TA was not that harsh on grading and was overall pretty helpful.
As for workload, I personally did not read the vast majority of the textbook, but watched most of the lectures and read the course reader alongside it. I think that reading the course reader should be sufficient for most people when studying for the final, but the lectures (2 hours per week) are helpful for the quizzes and essays.
Great class to satisfy your GE requirement. I personally found the quizzes often tricky, especially one or two questions, but for the most part, they were doable. The essays, however, depend entirely upon how stringent your TA happens to be. I am selling a PDF copy of the Pinker textbook. Text me at ********** if you're interested in the textbook!
Class isn't so difficult you watch the lectures. However, if you don't let me say you will be behind since there is a lot of concepts to understand and memorize. Took this as an online class over the summer -
We basically watched pre-recorded videos for lecture, which you essentially need to thoroughly watch as answers to short essay questions are embedded in the lectures. They're dull, but pretty much made up 80% of the material taught.
The final paper was very interesting for me as a bilingual speaker, but it was also difficult since I've never really analyzed language before, but the essay was graded pretty easily so it's not something to stress about
Office Hours were done live online, where the TA basically goes through his own slides and answers questions that students have through an app. They're actually really helpful and I preferred those over the lectures themselves.
The test was very easy - as long as you paid attention and studied a bit before the test, there is no reason why you wouldn't do well.
Oddly, this class wasn't actually taught by Bozzone -- we watched online lectures by Professor Hayes and attended a single discussion section every week. As such, a lot of this class's experience depends on the TA you get.
This was a super easy class, and still managed to give me some insight as an introduction to linguistics.
I had Bozzone as a TA. The class was very stressful. The quizzes were oddly specific and due to the volume of student complaints, she made the final exam extremely easy. The class was kinda a nightmare, but most students pulled through with a decent grade at the end because so many people were angry.
One of the most infuriating online classes I've ever taken. Although Professor Bozzone was extremely generous with grading towards the end of the term, the scale caused a lot of undue stress at the beginning of the term, when quiz questions were ambiguous and oddly specific since it was open notes/lecture videos/etc. TAs were relatively anal with grading as well. Granted, it is possible to do well if you're extremely detail oriented, but this course was not a pleasant experience.
Very straightforward class. The concepts are super easy to grasp. Quizzes are not as bad as other reviews. As long as you watch the lecture videos carefully, it is gonna be a breeze. The final exam is even easier.
I only studied two hours for the final but still got 106 out of 100. (There were extra credit questions)
Professor is very responsive through emails since this is an online class. My TA is also really nice and helpful. She is very lenient in terms of grade. For the final paper, I got 100/100.
Again, this class is too easy but also very interesting to me, since I speak several languages personally. I wasn't quite interested in linguistic before taking this class, but now I hope to learn more about linguistics.
