The grade breakdown for my quarter was as follows:
10 percent: Participation (attend 8/10 discussion sections)
20 percent: Essays (9 total with 2 dropped)
20 percent: Quizzes (10 total with 2 dropped, but 3 got dropped because I think a bunch of people complained about the way quizzes were scored)
20 percent: Final Paper
30 percent: Final Exam (50 questions and 5 extra credit questions)

The final exam was really easy (a lot easier than the quizzes), and only covered application of general concepts, definitions, etc. The final paper involved comparing your native language and a second language you had exposure to, and the rubric for it is pretty straight forward (but not sure if the grading will accurately follow it since haven't received the rubric yet), The quizzes and essays are what most people had problems with from what I can see from other reviews. The quizzes are mostly questions pulled from the online recorded lectures, but some involve application of concepts, and the scoring was a bit odd for them (ex. selecting 3 answers, but getting 1 wrong resulted in you only getting 1/3 credit for the question). Acing the quizzes is doable if you watch the lectures and have a TA that is willing to help during discussion. As for essays, it is largely dependent on what TA you get. In my case, my TA was not that harsh on grading and was overall pretty helpful.

As for workload, I personally did not read the vast majority of the textbook, but watched most of the lectures and read the course reader alongside it. I think that reading the course reader should be sufficient for most people when studying for the final, but the lectures (2 hours per week) are helpful for the quizzes and essays.

Great class to satisfy your GE requirement. I personally found the quizzes often tricky, especially one or two questions, but for the most part, they were doable. Literally, nobody I have ever known has had more problems with Ling1 than the people in this course. They ruin the course and the subject itself by making it so vague and impossible to succeed.

You can fail a quiz for missing 2 out of 10 because the questions are multiple parts and if you miss even just one of the parts, the maximum points you can get for the question is 3.33 out of 10.

This course ruined my winter quarter without a doubt

Any review prior to the final exam (March 22nd) should be changed. Because I just changed my review on March 27th.
- She made the final exam extremely easy on us (95% were repeated questions from the online quizzes/essays)
- She knew how vague her quizzes and essays were and she even dropped an extra quiz because of these bruinwalk reviews and complaints, I believe.
- She didn't teach the class but she was knowledgeable enough to cover the same materials.
- Online material was hard to grasp because it was so vague but the grading system was extremely lenient.

SHE IS BAD. DO NOT TAKE HER UNLESS YOU WANT TERRIBLE QUIZ GRADE. YOU WILL FAIL UNLESS YOU GET A GOOD TA AND TA IS LENIENT ON THE ESSAY.

So I took Ling. 1 online and I regret it. This class is so conceptual that you literally don't know which one of the options is the right answer since they all look the same. The vagueness is real so beware. I believe that they make this class harder that what it seems. My friend took Ling. 1 online with another professor, but she said it was super easy.

There are only ~2 hours of lectures to watch per week at your own pace, along with one mandatory discussion. If you actually watch the lecture videos (which you should anyways), 75% percent of the quiz answers are given almost word for word, with only 2 or 3 questions requiring independent analysis.
Essays are extremely basic questions(again if you watched the lectures), 300 words total. These took probably 30 minutes a week. 3/10 quiz grades are dropped. 2/10 essay grades are dropped. 2/10 discussion attendances are dropped. With this lenient of a grading system, I'm not quite sure what the other reviewers are complaining about

It's difficult to comment on Dr. Bozzone herself because we never see her since the class is almost entirely on-line. However, the quizzes and essays we are graded on are actually really difficult and discussions are not really helpful in clarifying the material.

To give you an idea: there are 10 quizzes throughout the quarter. Each quiz is based on the material you learn that week (i.e. online lectures). These 10 point quizzes are HARD. I did well on most of them but not without spending 1-2 hours meticulously checking my answers, and even then I had no idea if my answers were right because the questions and answer choices were so f'in' vague. The essays are much more doable in my opinion, and you get one of those a week as well. I spent roughly 1-2 hours on them too. The grading rubric is very nit-picky for these.

The final paper is pretty easy in my opinion, but then again we haven't gotten them graded so it could turn out to be great or terrible. Overall, the workload is manageable, but the grading is so unpredictable that even if you know the material well you could potentially fail the class.
