Taking this class with Professor Wong means that you are choosing to self study the material. As other people have stated, the lectures are literally the same as the book which is Donald A Neamen's Semiconductor Physics (4th edition) which he uses for this course. The slides consist of pictures taken directly from the book and what he says in the lectures, you can directly find in the book. If you are planning on taking this class, I would suggest skipping the lectures and watching Jordan Edmund's lectures on YouTube instead.

The material for this class is extremely dense and you will not be able to understand from reading the book and Professor Edmund's were much more useful in making sense of what the book was saying. I would also like to say that the material in the book is extremely intimidating as each chapter involves deriving dense equations (e.g. Chapter 2 derives the Schrodinger equation) but luckily with Professor Wong you only need to know how to apply the final equations for the homework or tests.

The workload for this class is extremely light, only slightly more than ECE1 which is a seminar with a weekly paragraph writeup. There's one homework assignment every week and there are only 3-4 book problems for each problem set. The book problems themselves are quite difficult even though the TA does the first problem in the homework set during discussion. I would expect a 70-80% average on the homework assignments as they do not give partial credit and every problem has subtle nuances that you're likely to miss. Even though the workload is light, I found this unhelpful for learning the material as practice problems were the only way to fully understand the material.

I found the midterm to be challenging and the final to be extremely challenging even though I did well on both. Both are extremely similar to the book problems. I would say the midterm/final consists of the average hard problem at the end of each chapter. From what I could tell, there is also no partial credit on questions and a silly mistake will lose you all the credit for the problem so be extremely careful in your work. The average for the midterm was 78% and the final should be around 60% although he hasn't released stats for the final.

Grading is 49% homework, 1% course survey, 25% midterm, and 25% final and there is apparently a curve for this class although it was either extremely small or people did better than expected this quarter so it was negligible. Office hours were not useful as the two times I showed up the professor was not in his zoom, however the TA was quite helpful when I emailed him several times.

As for my opinion on the course overall, I personally would still take it since the workload is very low, but for you it depends on how capable you are of self studying the material. I know taking it with a different professor would mean a much higher workload and much more difficult tests so it's really up to you as to what you want. I did find the course material somewhat useless because unless you're directly going into semiconductor production/manufacture, you'll be using none of the equations or math you learn about in a practical setting. The high level concepts are much more useful and they can be reasonably covered in an hour or two of lecture.

Material for this class is hard but professor Wong made the class like a joke. He's lectures our useless, he basically copy and pasted each page of the textbook in his slides and read them to us on lectures. Grading for this class is 50% hws, 25% midterm and 25% final, but don't assume this makes it easier. It doesn't matter how hard you try for hws, you can't ever get full points on it because averages for all hws are around 70-75%. He's midterm and final our really similar to his practice test so you just have to make sure you understand them. Overall you don't learn anything in this class but you will get a decent grade if you do the work.

EE 2 is supposed to be hard. Professor Wong makes EE 2 ridiculously easy.

Everything taught in this class was straight from the textbook. Lectures were a waste of time. You should go to lectures if you do not want to read the textbook.

The midterm was easy, where the median was around a 95%.

The final was extremely difficult, with the median around a 60%.

Homework is extremely light. If you do not care about learning and want an easy A, then take this class. You will get nothing out of taking this class.

I have no idea how I received an A in this class. The other reviews are right, you can get by in this class with just the textbook. I spent maybe an hour a week just doing the short homework assignments for this class, and I just did all of the practice problems at the end of the chapter to study for the exams. I never went to lecture and never read the textbook, except for the equations that pertained to the homework problems. Additionally, it seems that Professor Wong and his TA have eased up on grading the homework, as it was fairly easy to get 100% on the homework assignments, and I didn’t find the TA to be a particularly harsh grader.

Up until the midterm, I sat faithfully during lecture and wrote down detailed notes. When studying for the midterm, I read the textbook and my notes from class. I shit you not they were word for word the same thing. After the midterm I went to lecture and sat there with the textbook open. Professor Wong said exactly the same things as the textbook! At that point I just left and took notes from the book since he was just copying down the textbook onto the board. Pretty easy class overall with the midterm being easy and the final being hard AF. Lecture is useless unless you want to watch a professor who doesn't care read out of the book. He was a nice guy though and very friendly!

Professor Wong is without a doubt one of the most engaging and efficient lecturers I've had. I recommend you to NOT skip his lectures as they are super useful. I leave every lecture wanting to learn more about semiconductors. The TA's were spectacular as well, and they truly made use of the discussion sections. Homework was also super useful and the midterm and final both presented very good questions and thoroughly tested our knowledge of the subject. Overall, I definitely recommend everyone take Professor Wong's class and you will truly appreciate it.

Lectures are right out of the book. 50% homework, 25% midterm, 25% final. Homeworks aren't bad. Midterm was easy, final was impossible. I could see this class would be an utter pain, but the professor did not make it as hard as it could have been. I would recommend that you take this class with him.

Overall it's just a chinese person reading off the textbook. Final did not test anything and was hard as balls. Median was prob around a 50% or less.

Absolutely useless lecturer. Everything is derived from the textbook so best bet to just learn by yourself since you can look over confusing material more slowly. Easy midterm, but he absolutely blindsided us for the final. Don't get complacent.
