Very simple evaluation of jazz 50A....
Harrison goes off on tangents brings up his childhood alot and plays tons of videos... TONS.
Class is extremely easy if you study the study guides from your TA.
The grades just released for the class and i got a 95% and i only been to lecture about 5 times.
There are 3 essays 4-6 pages each (one is a rough draft everyone gets 100% on that one) and then a midterm and final both 100 questions each.
THE TA MAKES YOUR GRADE!!! Attendance is taken in discussion and generally EVERYONE gets A's on the essays if you meet the page requirement and sources.
If you are just looking for the A and not really learning about jazz dont buy any book except course reader i wasted a ton of money.
First midterm i got a 100% and final i got 90% both times i studied the night before and day of.
LEARN THE SONGS IN ADVANCE TRUST ME.
In general take the class! All you need to do is got to discussion and make friends with people who are in other discussions so you can exchange study guides! class is easy as long as you study for midterm and final. PS. Do not take the black TA he is the worst!!
I took this class because I needed a GE, it fit my schedule, and people mentioned that it was a "must take" I honestly wish I had just taken something else. My experience was just kinda ehh in this class. Lecture was 1 hour and 50 minutes. There is no power point everything is verbal notes. I can not tell you how many people would leave the lecture hall, or would be on their laptop the whole time because it just got boring. Taking notes was honestly hard sometimes, he would hop around between musician after musician and instrument after instrument sometimes it would seem like he was just talking to us rather than lecturing. You can tell he knows his stuff but I would have appreciated a powerpoint, I just couldn't keep up with everything. Usually he would show a video after he was done with notes, but honestly even that was boring and trivial. There is 2 Essays, 1 Midterm, 1 Final, and 1 extra credit opportunity worth 3%. You have to memorize a large part of what he says for the midterm and final and read the book because now he puts info from that on the tests. I was sick for a large part of this quarter and I just really disliked how trivial and annoying this class was. A large part of my distaste for this class was my TA, he was a harsh harsh grader and I didn't do as well as I had hoped on the essays. Your TA decides your grade for these and mine didn't grade on "grammar and structure" like the rest apparently did. So honestly nothing against Professor Harrison, but I just disliked this class, I disliked my TA who made a class that could have been enjoyable an annoying adventure. Take it Pass/No Pass if you really do want to take this class and ask around for a good TA.
From what it seems like, Ethno 50B is harder than 50A... because Ethno 50A was super easy. If you put in a full day to memorize all the facts/songs before the midterms (2 midterms, 2nd is not cumulative.. no final!) you will get a guaranteed A. Harrison offers a 3% extra credit assignment - DO IT!!!! The 10% of your grade that comes from discussion really depends on your TA, however. So pray that you get a good TA.
Actually took 50B. This class was really annoying. There's so much stuff that you need to know for the tests it's absolutely ridiculous. Also he tests you on material from the textbook I don't know what everyone is talking about. Basically if you're looking for an easy A don't take this class.
