This class was cross listed so it is also Chicanos in Film/Video M114. The reviewer below sounds like a boring person, imo, because this class was so fun! They were right that she tells stories about her life but not all the time. The stories are funny and have always been relevant to our discussion, at least the ones she mentioned in the class I took. I took this class online through Zoom. Each week, we watched a film and had light, interesting readings. The class consisted of five short journals (less than 500 words), and you could choose any five weeks out of the ten to complete them, which made it super flexible. We had a midterm paper and a very easy creative project where you just picked a theme from the course and used it in any kind of creative work. You could draw, make a video, a TikTok, write a poem, make a collage, etc. and all you had to do was write one paragraph explaining how it connected to the class. Participation is a must in this class, but all you need to do is share your opinions in class and sometimes reply with a couple of sentences to a discussion post the few times she posts them. It might sound annoying, but the topics and films are SO fun that talking never feels like a chore. For me, it honestly felt like I was just discussing the films or something I read with a friend because this professor is so funny and lively. This is an easy A, and you learn so much. I looked forward to class with her every week. My TA, Briceida, was also very sweet. I'm a senior, and this is my favorite class I’ve taken at UCLA. :)
I was really excited about this class, and the topic is still interesting to me. However, this is probably the worst professor I have ever had. She frequently gets off topic, and she has told us more about her life than she has about anything else. She recently got off topic telling a story about being drunk and seeing Woody Allen. She complains about her family a lot, and then loses her train of thought. She also frequently says things like, "cringe" and "You don't want to know what I think about that". That being said, the readings are really interesting so I am at least learning from those. You'll get an easy A, but it doesn't feel worth it because sitting in class is a chore.
this was my first class in the department and wow I very much enjoyed this professor. she is so engaging and every class I laughed and enjoyed what we learned. the films and readings were very interesting so I didn't mind them.
assignments were based on journals only 5 out of the whole quarter and a midterm / final which was an oral history paper and a research paper about ur oral paper. it was very easy if you follow the directions and particapte.
