Professor Grijalva is a sweetheart. That is the first thing I can think to say about him. He is genuinely concerned about his students and really wants to make sure we understand what he is talking about. Both he and his TA wish to help the class do well. The tests are fair, and though I find the material difficult (I am not a science person) Professor Grijalva is not. My only warning is that I took Psych 15 hoping that the class would help me decide whether or not I wanted to pursue Psychology, but the class is based almost solely on biology (and Grijalva says this during the first lecture). Sometimes I find the lectures hard to follow, but this is because science does not come easily to me. I respect Grijalva very much and would definitely recommend him to anyone who wants to take this course.
I suppose I'll have to talk about the class itself and the Professor as a person separately.
Dr. Grijalva is a really nice man. He cares enough to stay a long time after class discussing test results, the material, and even going over answers. He also has a very lenient curve, enough to raise someone up one whole grade.
The course on the other hand is probably not recommended for people who cannot memorize terms. The tests were confusing and multiple-choice. In a large class, this is the only way to check everyone's progress since the TA cannot possibly grade 200+ written essays. However, this means that everyone has to study EVERYTHING in the book and lectures in order to ensure that no questions are missed due to oversight. The class has a terrible structure, but the professor is really really good.
I'm still kind of torn on the issue. The class is called Psychobiology, but it's much more biology that psychology. As long as you walk in knowing what to expect, you should be fine.
Nice Professor. I am not a psych/psychobio major, nor do I like science, and this class was an easy A. There is extra credit and a curve. No midterm, no final, instead there are 3 non cumulative exams. My advice for this class is to make flashcards because there is kind of a lot of memorization. It seems like Grijalva wants as many people as possible to get an A in his class and many do.
Great Professor. The key to doing well is to read the book over and over. All of the questions come straight from the book, and most deal directly with general experiments and facts. Don't worry about the small definitions, and don't worry about the very small things on his lecture slides. He gives plenty of extra credit too. I ended up with an A+, and the lowest grade he assigned was a C-. Also, be sure to go to his final review as he will indirectly go over the entire test.
Thanks Professor.
Great Professor! Really wants to help students out and it shows on tests. I got an A+ that I earned. He's a nice guy and really approachable and available for any questions or comments. I only wish there were more professors like him at UCLA.
Class was based on 150 points. 60 for the midterm and 90 for the final, multiple choice tests. the final is not cumulative, it's only based on the whatevers after the midterm. he occasionally offered extra credit points, once for attending a lecture and another when he added 10 m/c questions to the final covering material before the midterm. test questions are primarily based on his lectures (which are posted online), but reading the book helps to reinforce the material. relatively an easy GE course, especially if you put a little effort into the course.
