Professor

While his lectures tend to get a bit boring as he basically repeats word-for-word everything off of his lecture slides, he is a kind and funny professor. His soothing voice definitely knocked out a few students during every lecture. It may be tempting to skip lecture because his lectures are on bruincast, however going to class paid off. The tests are straight-forward and if you keep up with the reading and the slides you will ace them for sure. He doesn't have a midterm and final, and just has 3 exams throughout the quarter each weighted equally. Our last exam of the quarter had 10 extra credit questions which helped the class a lot. I'm a freshman and I ended up with a solid A in the class. Go to lecture and make sure you understand the concepts and you will at least get a B!

I suppose I'll have to talk about the class itself and the Professor as a person separately. Dr. Grijalva is a really nice man. He cares enough to stay a long time after class discussing test results, the material, and even going over answers. He also has a very lenient curve, enough to raise someone up one whole grade. The course on the other hand is probably not recommended for people who cannot memorize terms. The tests were confusing and multiple-choice. In a large class, this is the only way to check everyone's progress since the TA cannot possibly grade 200+ written essays. However, this means that everyone has to study EVERYTHING in the book and lectures in order to ensure that no questions are missed due to oversight. The class has a terrible structure, but the professor is really really good. I'm still kind of torn on the issue. The class is called Psychobiology, but it's much more biology that psychology. As long as you walk in knowing what to expect, you should be fine.

Fantastic professor! He is very gentle and soft-spoken but VERY approachable and concerned about your learning. He is very available and really seems to love his work. The class, needless to say, is truly interesting stuff. His tests are almost TOO fair. They are comprised of MC, short answer, fill-in, and short essay. Sounds scary, but they are really straightforward and dare I say, fun. Tests are straight from his lectures and the book (which was really fun to read - "Why Zebras Don\355t Get Ulcers"). Great class and great professor....highly recommended!
