I absolutely love Carlos's class. Though the 8 am sucked, he made it worth waking up for. His lectures are more seminar leaning as we would discuss a wide variety of topics, all of which covered how media influences or projects what society thinks and feels. English is not my strongest subject, but the topics that we covered made me appreciate more. Also, make sure to participate during the open discussions!! We never got a breakdown of how each assignment/participation was weighted, but I'm pretty sure attendance and participation held a good chunk of the overall grade.
Assignments were never overbearing (only if you procrastinate). The readings are dense, but it is essential you do them or you will have no idea what to do during lecture. All of assignments during lecture are based off of the assigned readings and done in table groups. There are two main essays, one which you get to redo for a better score and then the final. For each essay, Carlos arranges a meeting to help you revise your draft and answer any questions you might have.
Overall, Carlos makes the class really fun. He's a really chill professor and has good style. He's passionate about what he teaches and does everything to make sure you succeed. 10/10 recommend! :)
Amazing professor who gives amazing feedback. Highly recommend.
He is literally the slay of all slays
I took this class for my writing requirement and ended up loving it. The quarter I enrolled in followed the topic of fear in America and delved into horror films, ongoing political/social issues and other media. There are no tests, only 3 essays throughout the course. The first essay was a diagnostic which was given full credit so long as it was completed and on time. The other two functioned as the midterm and final. I had a lot of fun writing all 3 essays which we were given plenty of time to complete and get feedback on. The professor is super approachable and helpful. I thoroughly enjoyed this class and would recommend it to anyone.
Professor Gomez was a great teacher, especially for anyone who didn’t have a solid background in English. I personally didn’t feel like I learned any new technical skills, but the readings were interesting and I enjoyed the class. Whether or not others participate really makes or breaks the class, so it sucked when no one raised their hand. Professor Gomez does a great job of trying to make everything interesting, especially with the Taylor swift lyrics as examples of literary devices. This class should be review if you took AP Lit (and your teacher was good), and professor Gomez is very flexible if you’re just polite about it and on top of things otherwise. I definitely recommend this class if English isn’t your subject because he’ll really help you get through it.
