Carlos was so bad.
He was nice but such a bad teacher. His homework assignments and exams were impossible (I got Midterm1 43% and Midterm2 38%)
He did give 10% of extra credit opportunity, but he was a unclear, overly difficult professor.
He did not curve the class so I was about to be in deep crap along with many other students
At week 6 he left UCLA for another job at Mexico. Good thing he left.
Edward McDevitt stepped in and he curved the class so I was saved with a B- in the class.
If Carlos comes back, AVOID HIM AT ALL COST
Well... I'm pretty sure Cantu left UCLA.
He was a super nice guy and gave a ton of extra credit, but honestly his tests were crazy hard. Even the take home midterms!!! Good riddance!! (not to him as a professor, but just to his awful tests!!)
Carlos is the man. You won't find another professor who's as enthusiastic, helpful, and nice as him.
I broke my writing hand the last two weeks of his course, emailed him about getting extra exam time, and then like 6 months later saw him and he asked me how my hand was doing. I'd never even spoken to him in person so I don't know how he knew that that was me, but it just goes to show how concerned and attentive he is to his students. Also, the guy actually won't stop smiling when you're talking to him--incredibly approachable.
Moreover, he genuinely tries extremely hard to make his class more worthwhile and enjoyable for his students. Few, if any, professors seek as much feedback on what improvements can be made as does Carlos. Also he's very good about responding to e-mails and making sure you don't lose points for trivial/unclear things. Like if you submit your homework online one minute late he'll still accept it, or if a question is poorly worded he won't count it against you.
That said, the class is pretty hard and is probably extremely hard for people who aren't very good at math. However, Carlos does a very good job of structuring the class to make sure that your grade is fair--you put in the work, you will get the grade.
Overall, one of my favorite professors at UCLA. Most professors, especially in math/science/econ, don't give a **** about you or your grade, and it's incredibly discouraging. In fact, I dropped the Econ major after Econ 102 because I was fed up with this. Carlos, on the other hand, tries to give you the experience you're paying thousands of dollars for. Wish I could have him for all my classes.
Econ 11 can be a very hard class but I think Cantu is one of the better professors. You will do so much better in this class if he knows your name. Go to office hours! They are also really helpful. Go to lecture and get Top Hat points if that is available, because that will help boost your grade. He says he doesn't curve, but with Top Hat and other stuff your grade can end up being better than just the midterm/final/homeworks.
His exams are extremely difficult. Clear conceptual understanding is intensely tested.
In order to fare well in this class – attendance, participation, and office hours are crucial. He typically awards 25 points in extra credit, if those parameters are diligently met.
I took Econ 11 with Carlos, and I found it absolutely awful. There are regular homework assignments that require hours of work to complete, and both of the midterms and the final were ridiculously difficult and seemingly unrelated to the homework material/lectures. In order to be successful in this class, you must put a lot of effort to study. The lectures provide a very surface-level picture of the material, whereas the exams require a deep understanding. Going to discussion and TA office hours is essential for this class. Carlos' redemption as a professor is that he is VERY generous with extra credit (in lieu of a curve) for those who participate in class, so attendance is highly recommended. Overall, the material was not overly difficult, but Carlos' method was ineffective and I would not recommend him as a professor.
So if you're coming from Econ 1 and Econ 2, this class is VERY hard. The materials are very challenging and Professor Cantu Garcias, matches that with his problem sets and exams. His problem sets are difficult but once you understand it, it helps with the overall understanding of the materials. BUT the exam problems does NOT reflect his problem sets. The exams bares little resembles from the problem sets, so you really have to know the materials really well. He doesn't emphasize this enough in class, but READ THE TEXTBOOK. The problem sets and exam problems both asks questions that utilizes your intuition so unless you understand math and its context, then you really need to read the book to get that intuition.
I struggled so much in this class but hard work paid off, I ended up with B+, I was so close to an A-.
It's a math intensive class and Professor Cantu Garcias has a strong math background as well, so expect A LOT of math. Though, he is very organized in his lecture notes (which is not inclusive of everything that he teaches in class so you still have to go to lectures). The class was recorded, but the quality was horrible, you can't see the board half the time. So go to class. He gives out participation extra credits for answering questions in class.
Overall, ECON 11 with Cantu Garcia is extremely challenging. He is a good lecturer and provides amazing notes; however, his tests are extremely difficult and I remember struggling with some of the problem sets.
