Easiest class I have ever taken, my TA was also very chill. I got a 100% in the class and barely had to do any work. Our homework every week were listening journals and it's basically a list of songs you need to listen to and write a small paragraph describing the song and your opinions of it. Other writing assignments are song analysis papers and the final paper was any song you want to write a paper about. I wrote mine on Everlong by Foo Fighters and got an A+. Highly recommend this class if you need an easy GE. I also took this class along with other hard ones so it was nice not to worry about this class.
This class is very chill. I took it as a GE and the workload was very light, even compared to other GEs. I think the material was interesting, though I mostly skimmed the slides. The class focuses on analyzing music and connecting it to historical context, and your grade is only dependent on mandatory discussion attendance and several essays. Most of the essays were fun to write, but the weekly listening journals can be a bit tedious. My TA (Andreas Apostolou) was knowledgeable and fun to listen to and was also very lenient on grading.
This class is so easy I can't stress it enough. I stopped going to lecture on like week 4 because I realized it was pointless. The material is more song analysis focused and doesn't have much to do with history. The listening journals each week can be a little tedious so I recommend spreading the work out and not doing them in one sitting. The best TA is Ms. Martinez! I would send her my papers (only 3 the whole quarter) and she gave feedback very quickly (I got 100 on all). RECOMMEND
Carlos was an incredible professor, however, this song is more about song analysis rather than history. Her teaching style was charismatic, informative, and organized while keeping a room of two hundred people interested, but you don't even need to attend the lectures to succeed in this class (I have been to about two and I have a 99% haha). I thoroughly enjoyed Professor Carlos's course and teaching style, I can't see one real weakness other than I had to frequently teach myself the basis of song analysis, such as some song forms and time signatures.
The real test is your TA, I had Lang and she was decent. She was kind of picky on random things when grading and gave us one pretty sizable listening journal per week plus another assignment every other week but it was manageable. Our Friday discussions also oftentimes feel like a high school class full of pairing up in groups and doing an ungraded assignment that passes the time. Seems pointless most of but it's easy. This class is just a lot of writing! Once you get the format of the first two weeks down you're golden- it's the exact same for the rest of the quarter. Take the class for an easy A!!
I thought this class would be talking about history of music but it felt more like music analysis. The lectures were about history, but all the assignments were about music theory which was hard for me with no background in music. We had to do listening journals every week which were a pain and I basically pretended I knew what was happening in the songs. You will get full credit if you put effort in though. The bigger papers are also based on music theory so it can be kind of hard if you don't know anything about music, but I still ended with an A. I wouldn't necessarily recommend this as an easy class, but I wouldn't want to take it again.
EASIEST GE YOU COULD POSSIBLY TAKE AT UCLA. An easy A class but the lectures were very boring and not super helpful. The discussion sections were a bit more engaging. If you like music, you will probably like this class, but the subject was not interesting to me. I didn't learn anything valuable. Oh and I hated writing weekly song analyses because I would have to force myself to sit down and listen to songs on repeat just to write about them and pretend I knew what instruments and techniques were being used. All of the TAs seemed to be knowledgable and understanding which was nice. Overall, the class was not my cup of tea but definitely a GPA booster!
Lectures could be a bit boring but for the most part they are pretty engaging. Super light GE. Listening journals are a bit of a pain every week but a good 2 hours a week is nothing compared to other classes.
if you're looking for a visual and performance arts GE this class is perfect! prof carlos is lovely and you can tell she really cares about what she's teaching. my TA was amazing too and always gave full credit as long as you put in good effort. there were weekly listening journals (not too bad, just a little repetitive) and a decent amount of writing but not unbearable. if you enjoy pop culture i especially recommend this class. overall 9.5/10 :)
This class was so much fun and I learned a lot about music. My TA was amazing and I would recommend this class to anybody.
I really enjoyed this class, I took it for a GE and definitely would again. It is pretty easy, there are three papers and a few other writing assignments but they are not too difficult and the topics are quite interesting. She is a good lecturer, and I found class genuinely interesting. I really enjoyed hearing this history from a woman, as that's unfortunately unusual in the area and it was refreshing to hear about the subject from a different perspective. My only critique is that she has some clear opinions, namely in favor of the metal genre, that leak into the class and present some bias. However, I still learned a lot and enjoyed this class a great deal. Also, there are no exams. Overall very enjoyable class, and would definitely recommend.
