To preface, I took this class online so it might have been a lot easier than it usually is. Professor Brown is one of my favorite Professors I've had at UCLA and I highly recommend taking a class with her any chance that you can. Her lectures were dense but super interesting and she loves what she does so it is super fun listening to her.
Recommendations: For her tests she takes exactly what she puts on her slides or says in class. She gives you learning objectives at the beginning of each lecture that are reflected on the midterm and that is all you need to study. If you take good notes during class you can fill out the learning objectives with little no effort whatsoever and then you're all set for the tests. She has three tests all weighted equally: midterm 1, midterm 2, midterm 3 (which is the the final). The first midterm was medium difficulty, the second midterm was supposed to be harder but I did better than I did on the first, and the last midterm/final is the easiest test which is supposed to boost your grade.
PS the TAs are great for this class and are super helpful answering study questions.
This is the second class I've taken with Professor Brown and this class met my expectations as she is an engaging professor! Lectures were not mandatory and podcasted (no video), but she posts very detailed slides you can follow. It can be difficult to know what exactly she expects you to know as some of the exam questions were on small details but as long as you follow her learning objectives and study guides, you should be fine! The class was divided into three in-person exams, each noncumulative and each acted as a midterm (two during the normal quarter and one during finals week), and discussion assignments. Discussion assignments consisted of some weeks where you read a paper and reflect; the other weeks were group case study presentations for which you did not need to do any homework. Just show up and participate in the discussion and you'll be fine besides for the week your group is assigned to present. This class was very chill especially if you did the case study in the earlier weeks and never worried too much about it! Take this class with Professor Brown!
I took this class online. Dr. Brown lectured live on Zoom and recorded for those who could not attend. This is a great class and I would recommend taking it. The tests were straightforward, easy, and fair. Lots of definition-type questions. Our tests were open for 2 hours and designed to take about an hour and 15 minutes. Dr. Brown posted study materials and the tests were almost word-for-word from the slides. The discussion required a group presentation. There is no busy work; the only real assignments are to read a scientific paper each week for discussion. No weekly quizzes or anything like that. Overall, this was a low-effort class with an entertaining professor.
