I took Copenhaver for philosophy 3 in an online summer session. The material was challenging, but his online lectures were great at helping to interpret the material. There was also a video conference once a week with our TA, Ari, who I think was a key part to making this course so interesting. I'm not saying its a walk in the park. There is deep thought involved with the writing, so be prepared. Initially, I had low expectations coming into the course, being a science major, but the professor and TA made me an admirer of philosophy.

I had him for Philosophy 3 DON'T TAKE THIS CLASS FOR THE PHILOSOPHICAL GE. Worst idea I've made in a while. His lectures consist entirely of far too in-depth material and him hacking up who knows what every 3 seconds. And don't expect him to involve the class in his lectures - I didn't understand at first that every question he raises in class regarding the lecture is rhetorical and meant to be answered by him. Don't expect any interaction with him unless you plan to go to office hours, which I couldn't think of a reason why to save my life, since the material is easy and clear enough even without his lectures. The TA's (or mine, Michael Lopez, at least) get upset and pissy that no one CARES ABOUT PHILOSOPHY and goes to office hours, which are at 730 in the morning before class by the way, and this DEFINITELY factors into your midterm/final grade in the class. I'm not a bad writer at all, I've gotten A's on every other college paper I've written so far, and I got a 71 on the midterm essay (worth 30% of the grade) which is posted on Friday and due on Monday, so I couldn't have gone to office hours even if I had wanted to. This class is way more stressful than a GE is worth. Class average for the midterm was an 80, which really shouldn't be happening for a PHILOSOPHY class. If you're looking for a GE to take, avoid this one like the plague.

I currently taking phil 3 with him and this class is by far the hardest GE I have ever taken. The TA's think they we are philosophy students and expect us to know how to write "philosophy papers". TAs are pretty worthless, they think you know and care about philosophy. The WEEKLY quizzes are supposed to be "easy" but can actually be pretty challenging. Avoid this class at all costs!!!

I had him for Philosophy 100B. I always have a great respect for my professors and often reason as to why they may have annoying habits or may be ineffective. Sadly, I can't understand why Copenhaver took a far too historical standpoint with 100B. The first text book was so painful; my TA couldn't even get through the work. But, I do like him. Would I take him again? Probably not, UNLESS it was a smaller class. Our class was in Broade 2160E and not only was it freezing (during WINTER?!) but big and he couldn't even hear you. I think in a class of at most 40, Copenhaver will flourish. Too much of an historical slant for my taste but I do understand where he is coming from. All in all, I felt like a learned quite a bit. Too many slides and way, way too fast. Do not read on if you don't want to be incredibly annoyed for the rest of the quarter: He coughs. A LOT. I didn't realize this until my friends pointed it out and now it bugs me like water torture.
