I had Leary for 3B, so I was used to his lecturing style. I like how he explains a concept and then goes through example problems. 3C is the last class in the 3 series and centers around probability. This class was challenging because I did not have much exposure to probability before this class. Tests were difficult because of the wide range of problems that can be asked. I went to his office hours and my TA office hours in order to understand the concepts in this class.
Professor Leary is a great professor. His lectures are very clear and organized. He welcomes students to ask questions during lecture and he is very patient answering those questions so don't be afraid to stop him in class and he'll explain to you what you don't understand.
Grading breaks down to two midterms and a final, plus weekly homework assignments. This may sound like a lot of work but each assignment only has a few questions and you can drop the lowest assignment score. He also allow you to drop your first midterm after the score comes out and put more weight on the second midterm and the final. All of these make this class a pretty easy one, definitely manageable.
Another great thing about professor Leary is that he let his student vote before he makes changes in homework assignment, review session schedules and even whether or not he allows cheatsheets on the final!
Take professor Leary for 3C and good luck studying :)
Professor Leary definitely has a passion for what he teaches and this shows in his lectures. His lectures are usually clear and straightforward, and the homework he assigns helps students apply what they have learned in class and tests their knowledge on the mathematical topic. There are two midterms for this class, but they were both manageable with no confusing questions. However, the final was definitely more challenging, and I did not expect it to be this difficult. I struggled with some of the problems, and I left the final feeling very unsure of my grade for the exam. I do not think he prepared us enough for the final exam.
Leary was my favorite professor last quarter. His lectures are incredibly straight-forward and the examples he explains in class are directly applicable to the small amount of homework he assigns every week. The tests are very fair and he's very approachable.
Highly recommended!
