Radd is an amazing professor. His lectures are super interesting. If you go to class you will get a good grade. His tests were pretty much straight from lecture . He gives study guides for the midterm and the final. The midterm was short answer and the final was ID terms.
Radd is by far the most engaging professor I have ever had. The dude's name is Radd for crying out loud. He makes all of his powerpoint slides with visual aids and it's impossible to not understand them. He only lectures for the first hour and then leaves the second available for discussion, and I highly recommend staying for that discussion time. You won't be penalized if you don't stay, but it's a great opportunity to discuss have any questions more in depth. The breakdown for this class was one midterm and one final, thats it... The midterm was identifications and fill in the blank, and the final was just fill in the blank ( I cried real tears of joy when he told us that). I think he is moving away from that model to instead have the class write a 500 word answer to a question he posts each week, and that's your whole grade. He also accepts late work with docked off points per day which is pretty rare from a UCLA professor. Radd is just over all a really cool guy, and I plan to take more courses with him in the future.
A great man and a great educator. I wish i could take Radd every quarter. The powerpoints in class were very organized and fun to look at. Radd doesnt do basic. I did bad on the midterm because I defined terms to general and didnt know what he was looking for exactly. After the midterm, he was willing to look over everyones midterm and regrade if we can explain to him what we meant on our ID definitions. The final was extremely easy. He required The Middle East by Lust but was willing to assign page #s in an older version which saved me $50. My only complaint is that Radd tends to be too brief with his lectures. It's 2 hours but he only uses 1. I wish he would fully use the 2 hours and expand on the topics he's discussing. 10/10
I love this class! If you can take it I recommend you do because he is such an engaging professor, and the material can be tough to understand because its a lot but it's fun to learn and he makes it so simple for the students to understand. He gave a midterm and a final. The midterm had I.D's and fill in the blanks, and he gave the I.D's a week before which is extremely fair. Take him if you love the middle east and an engaging professor.
