the professor knows his ish, but he's really quick and expects the students to know everything as soon as he teaches it.
the only thing bad is his writing... so sit close. he's a good teacher if you really want an education in chemistry.

Horrible professor. His lectures were too quick, unorganized, and extremely messy. His awful hand writing got in the way of getting his message across. His tests were ridiculously difficult...the mean on one was 26%. His TAs are arrogant and unknowledgeable. The text is random, ineffective, and unbearably boring. I would NOT recommend this professor to anyone. He is concerned about student learning but his poor lectures do not get the job done. Do yourself a favor and take Sherry's class.

VERY GOOD professor. He's one of those type of people that know everything about a subject: chemistry. His lectures are very complete, gives all these examples of applications of chemistry to the real world that make you understand much better. He is really concerned about your learning: answers any question in office hours until you understand it, staying even longer than the alotted time. Is willing to discuss your grades if you didn't do that well on exams. He understands students and is pretty encouraging. Like others have said, his exams are hard because they cause you to think, not like simple plug-in problems that are a waste of time. I didn't do that well on the first exam (partly because i was sick but) mainly because I was really expecting "give-away" problems. Second exam, I opened up my mind (and my sinuses too btw, :) and got almost 2 standard dev. above the mean. If you take this course, you may struggle because he does talk a little fast, but get used to it, it's not high school anymore. You'll get out knowing ALOT about chemistry (heck, I knew more than the people in 20AH). Good luck.

I think Professor Schwartz is a really good professor. You can tell he knows what he is talking about in his lectures, and is obviously very smart. I had no problem learning from him. I relied heavily on his lectures to prepare myself for his exams and aced both of them. Maybe chemistry is just easy for me. I'm a freshman, and I'd be happy if my professors in the futures can be half as good as he was. Too bad he isn't teaching 20B =( People who complain about him probably just did poorly in the class. I'll admit he does move pretty fast, but if you can keep up, you'll learn everything you need to know.
