Professor Harrop-Griffiths is probably the best lecturer I've had to date at UCLA, on-par with the legendary Carey Nachenberg. My friends repeatedly joke that I'm the only person they know who actually enjoyed taking 32B, and I must give credit to him for that. His lectures are clear, engaging, and interesting, and I really think the way he structures his class differently than the other professors made it that much easier to follow and understand.

His first two midterms are easy enough, albeit with a bit of a time crunch; his final, though, is quite tricky. It's really comprehensive and expects you to know everything you learned throughout the quarter, and will take quite a bit of problem solving ability to really nail it. I managed to get a B- on the final, getting most of the points on the problems but completely bombing the last one. Honestly, though, if you pay attention in lecture and do the homework, he does a good job of building up the topics on top of what you've already learned.

All in all, I can't recommend Harrop-Griffiths for 32B highly enough. If you get the chance to have him, take it!

Harrop-Griffiths was great. I really couldn't have asked for much better in terms of teaching for this course. Despite the tough online environment and the difficulty of the material, Harrop-Griffiths made it relatively smooth.

Lectures: Very clear slides, good detailed explanations, practice problems to keep you engaged. He posts the lecture recordings as well as his worked out slides.

Homework: Weekly assignments mostly from the textbook. Significantly harder than anything covered in lecture, so it is definitely useful to find people to work through or check answers with.

Midterms: Very fair and based on lectures. Marginally easier than homework problems and I felt well prepared with some limited study.

Final Exam: Harder than the midterms for sure. Don't be lured into a false sense of security by your pre-final grade as the final is much tougher. That being said, it is still somewhat fair given what was covered.

Overall, Harrop-Griffiths clearly cared about our learning and is very easily accessible for questions and clarification. He seems very tech-savvy which also helped with the online format. Take him for this class if you can.

Professor Harrop-Griffiths is great, highly recommend. He took the best parts of Zoom classes (chat, polls) to augment the in person classes using Slack. With the lectures channel in Slack, students can ask questions through the "chat" without interrupting the entire 200 person class. Polls on Slack were also used for plenty of practice problems during lecture, which were super helpful. It's tempting to zone out during these practice problems. Don't. The professor also posts lecture slides before lectures, and the notes from class are posted afterwards (notes are digitally written on top of the slides during class, which makes it much easier to read than a chalkboard!)

Homework (10%) is graded similar to how it's graded in most of the other lower div classes, as in, partially by completion, partially by correctness. There's a channel for homework questions on Slack. Join the class Slack early in the year so you can ask homework questions to the professor and TA's! The Slack is also where announcements and test info are posted.

Midterms (20% each) can be difficult, so definitely study! Professor Brown posts multiple practice exams. Go through them for real! Set a timer and put away your notes save for a single side of paper of equations (you get to write your own equation sheet for exams!). And then if you have time, go through them again! Solutions are provided; actually go through them fully.

Final (45%) is a large portion of the grade, but the material shouldn't be too unpredictable on average. Many practice exams are provided, so again, these are really helpful. Two sides of one paper of equations is allowed for this one. Very doable if you study the practice exams, previous homework and worksheets, book problems, etc.

Overall, this is a great class, and although it's not easy, it's also not too hard, and the professor is good at teaching and the class is interesting. You'll do great!

Professor Harrop-Griffiths is one of the best math professors I have ever had. You can tell he cares about his students and makes sure we are all understanding. His exams were fair. They require you to put in the work which is expected for any math course in the 30 series. He was practically available 24/7 to answer any question we may have through Slack which I truly appreciated because not many professors make it as easy for us to contact them about small homework problems or lecture questions. During office hours he was always excited to answer any and all questions and never made any student feel like their question was stupid (many math professors and TAs do). Overall, he is an amazing professor and I hope he realizes that his efforts do not go unnoticed. His teaching is great (explains every concept thoroughly), his exams are fair (if you take the time to study all the material), his grading is fair, and he listens to his students and takes note of ways he can improve. Definitely recommend!!

Leaving this class felt like 1776. I was glad to be free of the British, but at what cost?

Jokes about his nationality aside, I will say that Harrop-Griffiths is very charismatic and quite funny. He also is a very solid lecturer. However, the way he approached the second midterm put the majority of his students under extreme and unnecessary pressure.

He does not make this class an easy A. He doesn't even make this class an attainable A. I honestly think the only people who got an A after the curve were those genius whiz students (or that kid who kept mansplaining to the prof in class all quarter). I am a math major and I absolutely love the content of 32B, however, despite the fact that I ate, slept, and breathed this class 24/7, I scraped by with a B+ after the 10 pt curve at the end.

His slides are pre-written, so rather than focusing on his approach to the problems, many of us spent class time trying to jot things down as fast as humanly possible. Also, the questions on the exams are harder than homework questions, so you really need to spend hours doing tons of practice problems that may not even help you come exam time.

The real nightmare was the fallout after the second midterm. While the first and the final were pretty fair, a large portion of the students in this class failed the second exam. Despite recognizing that he made the test too difficult, he told us that he never curves and that he would only curve if we *magically* did very well on the final.

This class is difficult. The content is extensive. Rather than recognizing that, he expected us to have graduate-level comprehension of the subject and made absolutely no changes or accommodations to make this class manageable. He created a culture that incentivized cheating and that did not allow students to fully engage with the material out of stress and anxiety.

In the end, he did award us a generous curve. However, it was completely unprecedented. We all expected a final with the difficulty of the second midterm, so we spent half the quarter stressed out of our minds. After all, we were told that a curve would only be awarded to those who managed to score well on the final.

Overall, I don't believe I would take another class with him. However, I would also not be miserable if I were forced to. The key is emotional detachment and the acceptance that your grade will likely tank no matter how much effort you put in.

Quarter: Winter 2019

32B is considered one of the hardest lower divs at UCLA, and in this quarter I also had a pretty rough schedule. However, since I knew that it was supposed to be pretty hard, I made a really huge effort to go to office hours twice a week for HG, and these were pretty useful. He assigns homework from the book that was somewhat trickier than on the exams. The exams were mainly straight computation, with one proof-based question on the second midterm and two on the final. He did give out practice tests for all the exams, which were pretty helpful and comparable (although many people felt that for the final, this was not the case). One of the things he'll warn you is to NOT study strictly based off the practice exams, and these are mainly just an indicator of the difficulty of the exam and may not have the exact same problems/concepts. HG also had a unique order of teaching the material, which was overall really helpful and useful to understanding the material. He basically went from 1D all the way up to 2D and 3D sequentially, which helps you realize the patterns and similarities better.

Overall, HG is probably the best professor I've had so far. I took him my second quarter ever after taking Sylvester for Math 32A, and I actually felt like 32A was harder for me (this may be simply because I put in a lot more effort into this class). I would definitely take HG again for any other math class!!

Harrop-Griffiths is a very good professor and gives clear, useful lectures. Pay attention in class and learning the material will be easy. However, 32B is a pretty hard class altogether so applying the material on tests is up to your own knowledge/practice. The tests are reasonably difficult (~70% average) and the class is usually curved a bit. There is required homework which is actually graded, but there are no discussion quizzes, so discussions are optional. He also makes you write your math in sentences which I don't mind and I think makes it easier to explain your thought process and gain partial credit.

Professor Ben has a very different way to teaching this class (most professors go straight into double integrals, but he really likes to take things from a visual standpoint). This is both very intuitive and very engaging. We didn't see double integrals until fourth week, as we went from line integrals to double integrals to triple integrals.
His lectures have a very clear format, going by definitions, drawing pictures, and then moving onto examples. He does very well in answering the questions that are asked in lecture very precisely, and also his midterms and tests are pretty fair (the midterms are mostly like the homework problems, while the final was a little more difficult but in hindsight, very fair). The only caveat I would say is that he requires you to explain your answers throughout your steps, but I would argue that is actually a benefit as it encourages you to make it easier for your grader to understand your thought process, something that will come in handy for future examinations in any subject.
Overall, I would definitely take this class again (I made some silly mistakes that cost me a part of my grade, but I did very well on the final as his preparation he gave was very accurate). He definitely makes Math 32B a much more reasonable class than other professors.

It needs to be said that the final for this course was WAY harder than the midterms but be curves the class so no biggie. You need to know the properties of everything fairly well because each exam will have at least one question that is just manipulation of the equations.

Don't be like me, study hard and ask questions!
