She is such an amazing professor. Very lenient and offers multiple opportunities to pass this course. Utilizes a grading contract in which as long as you complete the assignment it counts towards your grade. Complete the research journal for that easy A (just a weekly reflection). She is very kind, clear, and supportive. I had no previous knowledge about this course; however, it was extremely interesting as we explored different aspects of media and its significance to academia (we even explored Kendrick Lamar and Beyonce ahaha).
Take HER!!!!
It's a really interesting class about gentrification around the U.S.
You will be assigned a group at the beginning of the quarter which you would do work with.
There are a couple essays (2 or 3) and a playlist.
Class meets were asynchronous, with her sending out slides with voice notes.
Highly recommend. Would definitely take her again!
Love this class! When I first took her class she was new professor at UCLA! She's a very chill and layback professor and the entire class bonded so well! She's super helpful when it comes to papers and I really learned a lot in terms of writing college papers.
I highly highly highly recommend taking her class, she's super awesome!
Professor Newby is great! The readings were super interesting. We had a grading contract so we were able to focus more on improving our writing. I felt like I gained a broad perspective on feminism and hip-hop culture.
Classes are very long and sometimes hard to get through, but the topic is interesting. I have been exposed to a lot of information that I did not know before. I recommend taking this class if you want to learn more about hip-hop and race relations. It talks about music as if it were a culture and it is very choice-oriented.

I love this class! It was centered on hip hop and that's what our essays and readings were about. I learned so much from this class and would highly recommend it if you have not satisfied the entry-level writing requirement. It's an easy A. Dr. Newby is also great when she would explain the assignments.
