I took Neuroscience 102 with Dr. Scheibel. This is the first time I have ever written a review for a professor, but this man is well worth it. The sheer amount of knowledge that this man has is enough of a reason to take this class with him. But even more than that I have found it to be a class that I enjoyed studying the hours on end for.
I will say this class is no walk in the park, but if you put the time in you will find yourself having a true understanding of the brain and nervous system as a whole. I would suggest recording the lectures and go back to them. I only was able to get half of what he said during the lecture so I used the recording to fill in the blanks.
I really don't know why someone wouldn't like this class if they put the effort into it. Yes there is a lot of material. Yes it will be hard. Yes it will be worth it.
I just took NS 102 with Dr. Scheibel. Although he's a very nice guy, I didn't like his teaching style very much. He either talks and write/illustrates on the white board or talks and points to his overheads of old pictures. We get handouts of key terms at the beginning of each class/lab but other than that you have to take reallyy good notes. I don't know if it's because of his voice or the sound system but I could never hear him that clearly in the lecture room, it was kind of muffled. You have 3 quizzes worth 20% each, and a two part final that covers everything. Starting from the second quiz, you'll be tested only on Haines slides of stained sections of the CNS (except for Part II of the final). I thought the slides weren't very clear, especially when he shows them through the old overhead.
I ended up doing the worst I've ever done in college, but that's of course mainly my fault for not staying on top of it. Anyway, IT IS A LOT OF WORK/MEMORIZING! Don't slack off and study for this class a couple hours almost every day if you want a good grade. Know your stuff real well because if you don't know from the top of your head, you won't have time to go back to think about it during the exams (the quizzes are short and for the Haines tests he points to certain parts on the slides, asks a couple questions, and moves on quickly so you don't get any time to go back to rethink anything).
I'm just glad to be done with this class because I don't want to sacrifice so much time to study for just one class again. I did learn valuable things but I think if the course format were different I would've absorbed even more material.
I had Dr. Scheibel for Neuro 102. I guess I don't even really have to write anything to convince you that he is amazing...just look at the posts below. He changed my view on pursuing medicine, on education, on my life...
Simply put, he is the best thing that the Neuro department (actually, whole school) has to offer. He truly is an asset to this university and to his students. Take this class and take it with him.
Hello all:
This evaluation is actually for Neuroanatomy 102.
John Wooden often recites this poem:
"No written word, no spoken plea could teach our youth what they should be, nor all the books on all the shelves, ITS WHAT THE TEACHERS ARE THEMSELVES"
I belive this quote and many others like this describe how I feel about Professor Scheibel. For me, my four years of tuition to study at UCLA would have been all worth it if I had only taken Neuroanatomy 102. When I studied neuroanatomy, I took the subject much further... I started to introspect and began to learn who I was beneath the surface. Dr.Scheibel was right, after neuroanatomy you are never really the same because you learn about this [amazing, phenomenal, complex, powerful] piece of protoplasm that truly is what makes you unique. And then things start to get fun :) I hope you will enjoy the course as much as I have, I really wonder sometimes if incoming Neuroscience students know how lucky they are to have this experience with Dr.Scheibel.
Neuroanatomy 102 with Dr. Scheibel was the college experience that truly changed me.
Let me start off by saying that Neuroscience 102 was the most difficult class that I have ever had the PLEASURE of taking. Going into it at the beginning of the quarter, I was worried after seeing Dr. Scheibel's high difficulty rating on BruinWalk, and the fact that it was my first quarter of Neuroscience upper div classes. But in the end, I am proud to say that I actually enjoyed countless hours of studying (even skipping out on Halloween weekend) to prepare for his quizzes and the final (which I just took today). Prior to taking this class, I was the type of student who was barely passing most science courses, getting Cs and average scores on exams. Although I have always planned on going to med school, I was not putting in the amount of effort that would get me there prior to Dr. Scheibel's class. His passion for neuroanatomy and medicine inspired my interest in neuroscience to the extent that I changed my entire outlook on my academic career. In addition to gaining truly valuable knowledge that I believe will remain with me for years, and be a huge benefit to have in medical school, the study skills I have acquired throughout this class have shown me that I can get succeed in anything if I truly put my heart into it.
Dr. Scheibel is an amazing professor, an inspiration, and a truly legendary man. If you are considering a career in medicine, this course will show you a real taste of what it is all about. His lectures are given in a VERY professional, 'medical school' atmosphere, and you will look forward to every one of them.
In regards to difficulty, the course is VERY difficult due to the immense amount of memorization of neural structures, connections, and countless hours of studying the Haines Neuroanatomy Atlas. The course is very fast paced, especially at the beginning when you are still getting used to Dr. Scheibel's teaching style. Notes are crucial to your success, and studying every weekend is a MUST. Record his lectures, re-listen to them at home and fill in notes you missed, and don't miss a single lecture! Give this course your full dedication and effort and I guarantee you will have an amazing quarter!
I took Neuroscience 102 with Dr. Scheibel. Many neuroscience majors say neuroscience 102 is the hardest class they have had to take, but I beg to differ. Although his class is very challenging, Dr. Scheibel teaches it very, very well. I found Neuroscience M101A to be harder than Neuro 102 in this regard. It's amazing how an 84-y/o professor makes material a lot more interesting than the 101 professors do, and 101 professors are half his age.
He is also very professional; for example, in one lecture after a quiz, not many people showed up. He gave the lecture as if he were delivering to a 200-seater seminar for VIP's, which is the way he does it every single lecture. He will treat you with utmost respect.
His 20-minute quizzes are the "midterms" in this class. I personally found the T/F and multiple choice questions harder than those quizzes in which we had to identify structures on slides and trace connections. I got a 70% on quiz 1, 95% on quiz 2, 99% on quiz 3, and 75% on the final. Too bad I choked on the final (Neuro 101A had a final just twelve hours before); I wish I could tell you I got an A or A-, but I got a B. But hey, I have no complaints about him or his class. It was spectacular.
If I had to take Neuro 102 again with him or his graduate-level neuroanatomy class, I ABSOLUTELY would.
