Quarter: Winter 2020

Anu Vikram is the only professor teaching this course at UCLA, and it’s required in our department. But this class is pretentious, and the professor can be unhelpful. Vikram wants to lecture and get out, and doesn’t care to answer your basic questions. If you ask, they will ignore you. It happened twice in my lecture series.

Don’t understand what modernity is? Don’t get what the homework assignment is? Ask your TA instead. Professor Anu will make you feel bad for asking.

CLASS : DESIGN/MEDIA ARTS 101
MEDIA ARTS: INTRO

I took this course over the Winter23, it was breeze and there were NO exams or quizzes just daily discussions posts.

She is very vague and hardly teaches btw, during class she shows videos of Media Arts. Like what are we suppose to do with that...but oh well I got an A lmao.

Side Note: We had a online midterm (writing based), roughly 2 pages long. We were given a whole week to submit on Bruin Learn.

Side Note: The workload is very minimal, all we had to do is choose one of the readings each week and make a discussion post about them.

An easy A class, I was worried to take this class because I was at 23 units my last quarter, but managed to get an A. SUPER CHILLL CLASSS!

Loved this class, you can tell Anu is really passionate about art history and while the subject is very eurocentric, they like to focus on indigenous art where applicable and includes a lot of engaging readings each week. The workload is very minimal, all we had to do is choose one of the readings each week and make a discussion post about them. Midterm is just writing about 2 pieces, and there is a short 1000-1500 word paper due week 9, and the final is just a reflection. Aside from that, the content of the class is extremely interesting and Anu does a great job of linking to a global scale.

This class was rather disorganized. The lecture slides consistently included 50+ images and she went really fast. My TA was also very unhelpful. The content of the class was very interesting and I enjoyed that. It's not a difficult class. I took all 3 quarters with Anu and she is a great professor. She takes our criticism of the class structure and made it significantly better Winter Quarter and Spring Quarter.

If you enjoy casual endorsements of neo-Marxism and shallow, logically fallacious analyses that somehow always arrive at the conclusion that the world’s ills can be blamed on “white people”, “capitalism”, “the west”, or “the patriarchy” – then this is the class for you.

If you value your time and care about your education – stay away.

An “easy A” is not worth subjecting yourself to this intellectually dishonest drivel.

This class is relatively simple to get through work-wise- there are weekly class discussions on the reading, followed by bi-weekly mini-quizzes, a midterm, and a final paper.

However, the lectures were painfully long and extremely unhelpful. Her slides feature only an image of artwork followed by her analyzing the piece for thirty minutes straight. She lectures by art period, but other than the paintings being done in the same time period there is no theme/understanding guidelines for what we're supposed to get out of the art. Essentially, you listen to her lecture for three hours only for the assignments/tests to have very little to do with the lecture. Not to mention, for a GE course meant for people of all majors and backgrounds, the readings were very complex and dense. I suggest referencing the textbook (which is actually pretty informative) and maybe 1-2 of the readings you understand best to get through the essays.
