P.S. I took Dr. Nassar's class a couple of summers ago and i assure you, you will not be dissappointed.
Physics prevented me from graduating at the top of my high school class, and so I hated / feared it for a while-- until Dr. Nassar came along. Nassar is PHENOMENAL. After taking 6A with him, I understood mechanics SO well. I could see how beautiful the math is, and why it made sense, and why the equations are or are not correct. His lesson plans are very well-constructed that he finishes lecture two whole meetings before exam date (without rushing at all!), so those two whole meetings he spends not on new material but reviewing for the imminent exam. Midterms in Nassar's class are similar to practice exams he gives out and goes over. The final is more challenging than the midterms, but it's not scary or impossible. About four of the questions on the practice final appeared on the actual final. Class average is high at 88%, which he pegs at a B to a B+. Nassar is very caring about his students. He will give his time generously to anyone who needs help. Office hours are nearly always crowded, but he extends it to accommodate people who need to see him one-on-one. He is handsome, kind and un-boring in and outside class. I have naught but much respect for this man. Dr. Nassar, thank you for making me think again. Maraming salamat.
Dr. Nassar is by far the best professor I have had at UCLA so far! He is not only available and extremely helpful in office hours, but he goes above and beyond to convey the information to the students. Before taking his class, I had never taken a single physics class before. I walked into the first lecture in PAB, dreading the subject I had always thought would be horrible... I walked out 6 weeks later with an extreme love of physics and for science in general. This class helped reaffirm my love of science, of its important and useful applications in everyday life, of its potency and its power to propel us into the future... I came to love calculus-based physics, mechanics, forces, Newton's Laws. Moreover, Professor Nassar's sense of humor and lecture style was a helpful method in learning physics. We'd have cool interactive slides every day, with pictures and sound effects. He connected physics with Escher and Salvador Dali, to famous musicians, to astronomy, and to Stephen Hawkins and his theories on the universe.
I especially enjoyed the lectures on free fall, torques, forces of friction, and black holes!
Professor Nassar details the chapters in lecture, gives us extra lecture notes that outline all the important facts, and doesn't focus on too much nitty gritty detail but rather focuses on a few concepts to tie into the bigger picture. He clearly states exactly what he expects the students to know and even indicates the most important questions in every chapter.
his curves are very generous and though his final is worth 45% of the grade, if you attend lecture and visit him in office hours, you'll have ample time to study and prepare for it.
The lab was also very enjoyable and tied into the class very well.
All in all, i walked away from the final and from the class feeling nostalgic and sad because I wanted to go back again at 8:30 the following Monday morning and learn more about normal forces, about displacement, about gravity, and kinematics.
And yet I had a feeling of contentment that I rarely feel after finishing other courses... a feeling of contentment in mastering the first class of the physics series, of overcoming my fear of calculus, physics, and mechanics, and learning once again why exactly it is I love science.
Thank you Professor Nassar, for a wonderful 6 weeks!
Prof. Nassar is absolutely phenomenal. He is honestly the best physics prof. I've ever had and I came out of his class within a much deeper appreciation and interest in physics than other physics teacher I have had. Nassar's teaching is very straightforward; during lecture, he will walk through every problem he expects you to understand on the test. He does sample problems with you, as well as incorporates very awesome demonstrations (he once laid on top of a bed of spikes and had a student crush a brick with a sledgehammer over him as he lay there). Also, he includes various music and clip shows relating to the material that really makes a dry subject much, much more fun to learn. As long as you go to lecture and understand all the sample problems he does (and it's very hard not to considering he doesn't move on until he's sure everyone knows the material), then you should get an A on the exams. He believes in putting the "most fundamental" types of problems on the test, meaning he only puts in basic problems and does nothing tricky. The curves on the exam are also very generous; almost everyone gets an A on each exam and a lot of people get 100s because of the curve. Nassar truly cares about student learning more than giving you unnecessary and ridiculous examinations, as is evidenced by his constant efforts to get to know his students and make sure they are doing well in his class. If you need to take a physics class at UCLA and he's teaching it, then I certainly recommend him because you will both find it very easy to get an A as well as learn a phenomenal amount of physics in a fun way.
If you're decent at physics and study his past midterms you will end up with an A+/A (he repeated questions for me). Lecture-wise he tends to slur his words. I couldn't understand him sometimes. Anyway take him and you will get a good grade.
Professor Nassar was an awesome physics professor. He makes physics understandable and gives chances for people to bring their grades up for his curve for tests is very generous. He does a lot of hands-on demonstration with explicit explanations to each of the demos so that the students understand and enjoy a good demo.
Going into physics after dreading AP physics in high school, I was dreading to take physics again in college. However, after taking it with Nassar, my interest for physics was heightened and I am a very happy person. If you must take physics, take it with Nassar. It will make you happy during the summer too when you were dreading to take summer classes in the first place.
Best professor for physics.
