Holy smokes. The professor does try her best to help and is a pretty good lecturer. However, be warned that the homework takes 10-12+ hours for 6-8 problems total and the exams are brutal (final took me morning to evening). I took 110AH, 115AH, and 131AH, but this honestly was harder than them all because of how abstract or meticulous the problems I got. The class definitely makes your other upper-div math classes feel like a breeze afterwards though...good luck!
No exaggeration, this is definitely the hardest Math class I've taken at UCLA - much moreso than 115A, 131A, 164, etc. After the math department reworked Math 170A/B, I was definitely taken aback!
That being said, Iseli is a great professor. She's super engaging and cares a lot about student learning. She is really helpful with office hours, runs extra workshops for students, and really responds to student feedback. In general, I think she's an amazing professor and would strongly recommend her as a math prof!
But, the workload and tests were really rough. Iseli does try her best to prepare you for the class, but if you don't have as strong of a math background - in competitive math, etc. - I think this class will definitely be tough.
The class is really tough. I think it underwent a syllabus change not too long ago which made it a lot more theoretical compared to the 170E/S series. That having been said, the class is super interesting and the professor teaches the class well. I think the lecture material was sometimes a little too dense and fast-paced, but that could be a result of the syllabus and not really the professor. In terms of work load, it's certainly not an easy class. There's weekly homeworks which took at least 5~6 hours, which is not too bad except that the questions are all really difficult and many degrees more complicated than anything covered in lecture. This was the first class I pretty much had to attend every office hour to ask homework questions, and even then I needed to consult something like stackexchange for help because some of the questions were insane. Also the two midterms took about 5+ hours each, and the final took about 8 hours.
I took 170e with Professor Iseli, but I will write the review here since the 170e class does not have a class page. Lecture slides were always clear and concise (ie outlining goals of the lecture plus a small recap to previous topics) and my class was always active with questions. Quizzes were fair and quick, and homework was well paced. She dropped the two lowest quiz scores and the lowest homework, so you will have a grace period. Professor Iseli was very supportive and personable and I would love to take more classes with her in the future.
