I am currently sitting in Bresnock's Urban Economics Class, W12. This is the WORST economics lecture I have taken at UCLA. Bresnock literally READS off of the pdf notes without looking up. She does not project anything on the board and does not explain what the notes say.
She copied the notes from two textbooks, does not prepare before lecture, and frequently adds in self-promoting tidbits about her life that are irrelevant.
She acts offended if you ask a clarifying question in lecture, is not helpful when responding to emails, and has no idea that the class does not pay attention.
She assigns a take home midterm that is due the same day as the in class midterm. The take home midterm took about 20 hours to complete. It was 11 pages typed, single spaced just to put it in perspective.
I would not recommend this class. It is incredibly boring, confusing, and monotonous. Bresnock does not care about her students and should NOT be a professor at UCLA.
For all those that took this class, or are taking the class at the moment, I feel for you.
Haines 39, a room where you can have podcast, she uses overheads and makes mistakes on the overheads.
Usually 8am (for the econ 1 students) in the morning, and treats you like crap if you visit her at office hours. All of her TA's know nothing besides virginia and veronica. What the hell?
What makes her class difficult is that you don't know what you are going to be quizzed. The practice problems online are useless.
I also took Bresnock for Econ 1. I got a B in Econ 1, and a D+, unfortunately, in Econ 137. I normally hit around a B in my classes, so that is saying something. I found Bresnock to be a horrible lecturer. Her lectures are boring, and more in Econ 137 than Econ 1, she often detours into stories of her own personal life which have little to do with the material at hand. I can't even tell you how many times I nearly fell asleep, and this is not common for me. She presents the material poorly, and she delivers a strong "I'd rather not be here" type of vibe. At the beginning of 137, I showed up an hour early at her office hours, drove an hour to get out there, and she simply shooed me away and said she didn't have time to be at her listed hours. When I did ask for help during office hours, she simply seemed annoyed and impatient instead of helpful. She doesn't seem at all concerned about teaching the material or what we as students take away from the class. She just seems like she's only here because she has to be.
Didn't have this prof for econ 1, but NOT recommended for upper division. I took urban economics, and while I found it very interesting, I thought the class was unfairly hard. A "generous curve" does not mean moving raw grades up 3% (i.e. from a C to a C+).
don't take this professor for upper division courses, she doesn't know the material she teaches. when you ask her a question she just tells you to reread the book. her lectures are not helpful what-so-ever. they are copy pasted sections from the text, but she says she is doing the best to explain the material and then blames the class for doing poorly on exams. Not to mention her lecturing is basically yelling, and like the previous student mentioned, when you ask a question she makes you feel stupid and inferior. if you decide to ask a question don't ask in class, go to office hours. try to look up other material online because she's not good at explaining concepts.
