Don't take Econ 1 with this professor -- trust my word on this. I took Econ 1 with Bresnock because she had such great reviews on Bruinwalk, but it is very difficult to get a good grade (more or less a passing grade) in this class. The class average on the midterm was a 71%...and, she doesn't curve the class and doesn't give out any extra credit. Her exams are extremely tricky, so you really need to have a VERY SOLID understanding of the concepts to get an average score. I studied really hard and got exactly the average on the midterm. If you're just taking Econ 1 to satisfy a GE requirement, or for pharmacy school, don't take it here -- take it at a community college if you really have to. Her extremely foul attitude really made most of the class (as well as all of the TAs) dread seeing her. I felt like I was sitting in a very large prison with an evil dictator during her exams.
Bresnock is very organized and gives you exactly what you need for lectures and for studying for exams. but, she likes to trick her students on the exams, which are long and painful. Don't get behind in the work, and take advantage of your TA. The TAs can be more helpful than you think. She also likes to snap at students and make them feel stupid, so if you ask a question, don't freak out when she responds in a way that makes you want to sink down in your seat. good news though: she gives you 20 extra credit points at the end of class just for filling out a survey. it can really save you.
She teaches really well and she gives a lot of example problems to help you do well on the midtern and the final. the worst thing about it is that there are 40 multiple question with 2 free response and each multiple choice is worth 4 points. i thought that would be bad but if you study enought it is not. Plus, there are 2 computer projects that are pretty easy.
Bresnock is definately the better of the two opening econ teachers. Her notes are clear, concise, and you will learn a lot from her.
Her midterm and final are both worth 40% and her 2 computer projects are worth 10% each (they are easy 10%'s). She doesn't curve the class which may be difficult for some, but throws in a HUGE extra credit survey at the end and the computer projects are meant to balance out the point scales in case you mess up her final or midterm.
Her class is one that you will need to attend class (even though they are long, and quite boring), read the book, and you MUST take notes to do well. Her book is very good, just read it and take the practice quizzes online to make sure you understand it. I didn't bother with section and the "homework" she assigns - just make sure you do the review packet she gives out before the test and midterm. Aside from that she tends to bunch the hardest stuff at the end and doesn't have time to teach it, so reading the book would be a helpful suggestion on that topic.
Bresnock is a really good teacher who should have a higher rating here than she currently has. If you go to lecture, you will pretty much learn EVERYTHING you need to know for the midterm and final. Also, it will really prepare u for Econ 11. If you want an A, it is a must to do the midterm/final review sheet and the additional problems, because her free response questions are very similar to those. however, to study for the multiple choice portion of the test, you can either take 2 approaches and if ur smart enough to get into ucla, you will get an A...1) go to every single lecture (meaning stay awake), if you go to lecture, you do not need to read the book... or 2) read the book and every chapter she assigns, copy your friends lecture notes and read over them..the MOST IMPORTANT thing is to NOT FALL BEHIND because as long as you study 1 hour every weekday, you'll do well and you wont have to cram for the midterm/final, because there is no memorization, just have a FULL understanding of the concepts. BEFORE the test, read over each lecture note, do the midterm/final review sheet, and you are good to go. The midterm is harder because you are short on time, but she starts the test at 7:45, so arrive early! The class is 500 points...200 for each test (non cumulative), 50 for 2 easy projects + 25 points extra credit. Just remember to take this class seriously even though there isnt any homework and you'll be fine.My 1st year GPA is around a 3.4, got an A+, with a (187.5, 195, 45,50)+ 25 extra credit.
lectures were so early and you HAVE to go because you have to fill in the notes that she posts online. she whizzes through like 10 pages of notes every lecture so you barely have time to think or wake up. midterm was very hard!! i had gone to every lecture and thought i understood the concepts but bombed the midterm so bad. go to your TAs office hours and do lots of practice tests. i studied really hard for the final to pull my grade up and ended up with a C+ in the class. this is a hard GE and only take it if you have to. i came into ucla as a bus/econ major but after econ 1 and econ 2 i am done with bus/econ for good!!
Although this class requires a lot of work, this class is easier than I thought it would be. Her lectures are very effective and organized. She uploads her lectures online, so you just need to print the notes and fill in the numbers and graph during the lecture. This way you can focus more on her lecture than copying your notes. Do the following and this class will be a breeze for you: (1) Always go to her lecture even though 8am classes are such a dread, especially during the winter when all you wanna do is sleep in your warm bed. (2) Read the corresponding chapters before attending the lecture. This way you can absorb the materials faster as she goes through her lecture. (3) Do ALL the online pre-test / homework / handouts, etc. These are how her test will most likey be like. I never went to her OH and rarely attends the TA session, but I still walked away with an A. You will need all the time for the exams simply because of the nature of the free response question (they're so much easier than the MC but their time-consuming). As for the computer module, for the 1st one, do the old one first and then tackle your assigned one. It will really help you get a good grade on it. Do well in your module and complete her survey for extra credit so they will boost up your grade.
i loved her. yes, she's very sarcastic and a lot of people really didn't appreciate (understand) her humor. she does a good job of teaching though. she's EXTREMELY organized. all of her lecture notes and practice problems are online. if you follow her advice, you'll do fine in the class: attend lecture, read the textbook (it helps a lot!), do the online stuff, go through the study guide (really helpful too), and practice problems. it sounds like a lot but a chapter per week is totally feasible. grade is comprised of two easy computer projects, midterm, and final. to finish her midterm in time, you need to go early. the final and midterm were both pretty easy. i got a B in the class but this was my first economics class ever and i felt like she did a really good job of teaching me the basics.
As a 3rd yr Econ. major, I can now reflect that Econ 1 is the EASIEST Econ class I've ever taken. Bresnock is very straightforward and all you have to do is memorize the slides & read the book! Don't be afraid of this class or Bresnock. Piece of cake!
The class was pretty hard due to the way her tests are written. Questions are tricky, and the midterm is way too long, and hard and there wasnt nearly enough time to finish the test. Despite the unfair midterm, the class itself was pretty fair, she gives 25 points extra credit so that really helps with grades at the end of the quarter. Attending lecture is important essential to sucess in the class, but keep in mind that they are 8am and very difficult to wake up for.
