I enrolled in this class because it was one of the only ones left but BEST BEST class and professor you could possibly take for EngComp 3D!! He is so charismatic!! You will want to actually go to class and it is never boring. The readings he assigns are actually interesting too ! I was so scared to take a writing class because i suck at it but this class was actually ENJOYABLE.

Hes really nice. 10/10 would recommend. he's also understanding. great class TAKE THIS CLASS
I agree with the other review, Martinez is the nicest professor I've had so far! I hate writing, but the topics were interesting and that made it much more bearable. His grading is also very lenient, so I didn't have to stress too much about my essays and could focus on other classes. Would definitely recommend taking EngComp 3/3D with him.
Professor Martinez is a very funny and passionate about teaching, he genuinely cares about his students and wants everyone to get better writing skills. I took this class my first year and I do not think I have had a professor that cares this much. If you need help he is super helpful and resourceful, do not be afraid to let him know if their is something going on.
Professor Martinez is a great teacher and he always made his live sessions funny and interesting. I recommend everyone to take this class. He gives everyone the opportunity to succeed and will improve your writing.
I really enjoyed this class with Dr. Martinez. He is super nice and really understanding. The readings are actually interesting to read. I really enjoyed the essay prompts and look forward to writing my essays. He really cares about his students and really understands the struggles of what they are going through. His grading is very fair also. He really made the class relaxing and enjoyable. His class really brightened my day and I looked forward to coming to class. Looking back, I can definitely say I really improved a lot as a writer in a very short amount of time. I really hope I can take him again for another writing class. Take this class with him!
I took engcomp 3 with Dr. Martínez. Dr. Martínez is a very engaging professor, and he makes engcomp very interesting. The readings he assigns are very relevant to what’s going on in the world as well as the papers that we are required to write. The only thing is he isn’t 100% clear what he is looking for in the papers, but his grading is quite lenient. When I read my papers from the past quarter, I believe my writing has significantly improved. I highly recommend taking this class with professor Martínez!!
By far, one of the best professors at UCLA! Writing is not my strongest suit but I'm glad to have taken this class with Professor Martinez. His live and welcoming energy made 8 am classes very much bearable! You'll feel your writing improve as the quarter goes on. The only homework assigned is usually short readings (provides PDFs so you do not have to buy them) that are briefly reviewed at the start of class. We had 3 different essays throughout the quarter, and each time we'd do peer reviews which made it very helpful to see what could be improved on before our final submission. His grading was fair and feedback was helpful. I felt he was always prepared for class with slides/handouts. We had to keep a notebook (physical or digital) with our notes, readings/annotations, essays, etc. in which he would do notebook checks here and there just to make sure we were keeping up with the class. If you have the opportunity to take this class with Professor Martinez, PLEASE DO! Highly recommend it.
This review is for both Peter Sellars and Andrew Martinez, since they both taught the class. The class is very easy, and is structured to make you learn more about yourself, rather than to get a certain letter grade. The class helped me reflect on my life and what I wanted in the future. I learned better ways to live my life and this class helped me re-examine my goals. Attendance is mandatory, but it's only once a week for an hour (even though it's listed as 3). Discussion is definitely mandatory though, but I found that discussion was fairly enlightening. Even if you miss class, just let your TA know and they'll let you make things up. Everybody is very understanding and kind, and I definitely enjoyed this class.
Professor Martinez is an amazing person. He genuinely cares for his students. Despite being an 8 am class, he brightens the rest of my day. Professor Martinez learned most of our names after the first week and encouraged us to learn from each other. In this class, we had three main papers: a rather creative personal narrative (the story of my name), a literary analysis of one of the readings, and one persuasive essay on any topic. I loved how we got to explore the three different types of writing, and he gave us a lot of time and opportunities to brainstorm and make progress. He is also a very lenient grader, and he gives readings that are interesting and aren't super essential to the class. Overall, I think I grew a lot as a writer, so if you need Engcomp 3 or 3D, definitely take his class!
