A lot of people have been flaming Prof. Chapouto and honestly after my first midterm grade, I probably would've agreed with everything here. But I don't anymore. The one thing that's special about this professor, that I haven't seen with many lower-div profs, is that she cares about her students — and when there's 200+ of them, that's incredibly hard to do but important. She's super approachable and committed to helping us out, not just in her office hours but beyond that. I literally couldn't submit FOUR WEEKS worth of homework in my classes, and when no other professor would care to even listen to why, she was kind enough to give me a makeup assignment and a generous deadline to complete it so my grade wouldn't be affected.

Let's talk about her grading. After looking at the fact that her 1st midterm had a T/F section where everyone did badly, she dropped the entire section from our grade because she noticed it hurt our scores. Her grading in the 2nd midterm was INFINITELY more lenient (like to the point where I was even like "should I REALLY be getting credit for that?") and the 2nd midterm even had a 5-point extra credit question which was supposed to bump up our score. She also gives us the option to pick our best midterm and drop our 2 worst HW grades which is more than fair. What's more: she also just gave us an extra credit homework assignment to do that can add *7%* to our final grade — I mean SEVEN PERCENT? Who does that unless they really care about how their students are performing??

I also need to say Prof. Chapouto marked 200+ midterms in ONE NIGHT and had them back to us with quality feedback the next day during her office hours — just so the midterm would be fresh in our minds and we could learn from our mistakes immediately. All I can say is, if you want a professor who's super dedicated to her class, learning from students' feedback, and giving them chance after chance to bounce back, you won't go wrong with this class.

There’s a lot of negative reviews being written and while I can’t disagree entirely, this was for her first midterm. It wasn’t good in any way honestly, we didn’t get any practice midterms or review sessions with her for it like other classes did. The average was a cool 60% until she removed the true/false (i think) which had an average of 3/10 points. She’s definitely improved since then giving practice midterms and review sessions about material and the practice midterm. I genuinely believe she is improving as a teacher and listens to the reviews she got mid quarter. Her homework grading is still strict but she’s doing her best. She just got her PhD this year and it’s her first quarter. She doesn’t deserve to have her reputation tarnished by her first half quarter teaching, unless reviews are more of the same by the end of the quarter. I wouldn’t necessarily recommend her YET but wouldn’t say absolutely avoid her at all cost

The professor improved so much over the course of the quarter. Being a new teacher can be tough, especially considering she just got her PhD this year. She got off to a rough start in my opinion with the first midterm but she definitely listened to her students and then adapted accordingly. Providing more study materials such as practice exams was one of the best things she changed after the first midterm. Review lectures before our tests were also very helpful. Her grading of the homework was fair for the most part, yes sometimes there were some very picky points but I think it’s because she truly wants us to succeed in math and be accountable and correct. She was understanding and she works hard. I don’t believe her bruinwalk rating should be ruined by people reviewing after only the first midterm. She gives her class notes, while they may be hard to understand because of notation and missing steps, the fact she gives them is very nice.

You've probably been scrolling through a sea of negative reviews, and I can't necessarily dispute those – if you haven't taken Calc already, I would avoid her. That being said, it's also her first quarter teaching (like ever), and it seems like she has the potential to improve. The first midterm was terrible (class average 60%, super finicky T/F, etc.), but by the second one she had acknowledged those mistakes and it was much more reasonable. Her HW grading has also gotten a little more lenient as the quarter has progressed, and it seems like she's genuinely trying to listen to feedback and get better.

If future reviews don't indicate some improvement, by all means avoid. But I think it would be unfair to let her first ever quarter teaching tarnish her reputation this deeply. If later reviews are any better, maybe give her a chance.

Her lectures are incredibly dense and she often skips so many steps that leaves you wondering how she got to the answer. Her lectures are just her doing a lot of proofs which do not do a good job on helping you do the homework on your own, especially since the homework and test questions are much much harder. This class made my quarter miserable and made me dislike math that much more.

My roommate dropped this class after the first 2 lectures and I wish I did too. The lectures don't clarify, and she often spends most of the time spent on proofs rather than example problems. Even when we do, she skips a lot of steps which makes it really confusing to follow along with her. Our first midterm included a true and false section and my TA told us most students got 1/5 correct. Homework is graded very harshly, you can get everything correct and have a clear understanding but due to the 2 point grading system, you can get a 50% even if all your answers are correct. With the second midterm coming up I have never been this stressed out in my life.

Avoid at all costs. She seems nice, but communicates like a mathematician and not a teacher. This is her first time teaching a class ever (like, she received her PhD this year), and it shows. There are 9 very short homeworks on the content of the week prior (2 lowest scores dropped), 2 midterms and a final, and you can choose to weigh the final more if you do poorly on a midterm. Seems very fair. But in reality, what she wants in her answers is unrealistic, pedantic, and unclear, even to the TAs. Knowing how to successfully apply calculus concepts won't get you an A, but knowing notations, jargon, and proofs will. And with so few assignments and no extra credit, there are very little opportunities to score well.
The class average after the first midterm was a D if I'm not wrong, and most of us have already taken AP Calc and are starry-eyed freshmen who enjoy math. That should be all you need to know.

Edit after the final: Around week 7, it most people's averages turned around because she 1) dropped the T/F section on midterm 1 from our grades, 2) offered an extra credit assignment for almost a whole letter grade (7%), and 3) made the second midterm a lot more reasonable. I very much appreciate all this–I went from failing this class to somehow getting a 97. But nothing about my study habits changed, just the professor's unplanned/postmortem decisions on when to hand out points. As another example, she got asked on a weekly basis if she was going to curve any exams and would never answer—it always felt like we were in the dark. I felt like I had no idea what I needed to do to succeed, which is incredibly discouraging. I have no idea why people here are acting like the changes she implemented invalidate any criticisms of the experience in class; if anything they showed your success is in her hands and not your own. Again, Chapouto isn't unkind and I appreciate that she grades exams at lightning speed. But if you actually want to know your grade will reflect your hard work before 3/4s through the quarter, choose a different professor until she gets her bearings.

I went into this class thinking I was done with all the nitpicky grading from high school, but I was INSTANTANEOUSLY proved wrong. You literally get points taken off for the most meaningless bs that has no relation to your understanding of the class. Homework has barely any points and you get a 1/2 on a question for missing literally any aspect of it. There are so many problems I got the correct answer for but I didn't do what she wanted me to. Professor teaches like she's talking to people who already know the material. Heck if I didn't already know some of it from high school this review would be even worse. If you are in this class, in the words of LaKeith Stanfield, "get out". L class L professor 0/10 would not recommend.

If you in a hurry scrambling for classes, click the next professor! Homework is graded like your life depends on it, not only do you need the right answer but if the justification isn't to par with the professor's liking you will get points taking off. There have been times when I have confidently gotten all of the answers right, yet got a 9/12 because half of my justifications weren't enough. Secondly, the midterm was one of the hardest tests I've taken in my life, but according to her it was fair because "everything is fair game". There was no practice midterm, she tested us on theorem (True or false) with like 20+ theorems in the book, and there was no clear indication what would the questions be like on the midterm. Although homework problems may have seemed like a breeze because she assigns only 6 per week, she picks out problems that are related to theory (hardest problems in the textbook) found towards the end of the exercises. With all this being said I love math but this discouraged me. Lecture were difficult to keep up with because she rarely stopped to explain or she explained while writing. I was always like 1 topic behind while she was already explaining another problem. Basically, you have to watch lectures twice and then again before the midterm consider it your binge fest of lectures.

I decided to give her the benefit of the doubt when I enrolled in this class; however, I very quickly realized that I made a terrible mistake. She is the worst professor I have ever had. AVOID HER AT ALL COSTS. She talks like a mathematician and focuses on proofs which is confusing to students and makes the material incredibly difficult to understand. She frequently says that she disagrees with the textbook and is incredibly stubborn when it comes to using methods that differ from hers. I have never met a professor so unhelpful and disorganized. She makes mistakes during lecture and skips steps leaving students wondering how she got the answers. In addition, the exams are incredibly hard. The class average on the midterm was a 60 % (and she doesn't curve!). Having taken AP Calc in high school and received an A, I am fully prepared to get a C with Chapouto.

Super sweet and intelligent professor, super difficult homework and midterms, and an absolutely draconian final. Not a whole lot of workload until you consider studying for the tests.
Forced us to buy a textbook, then uploaded the pdfs to all the homework about 3 weeks into the class after we were forced to buy the books. Genuinely upsetting to a broke college student.
All this being said, I think I learned a lot, and Andreia was really cool, but I would have rather just taken one of the easier professors and not have been completely discouraged from majoring in STEM and feeling like an idiot.

It's her first quarter teaching. Maybe this changes in the future.
