Amber Ankowski is known for her Psych 100B. She kept her exam practices from 100B to other courses like 133B, such that some exam questions are framed rather ambiguously. Besides, her lectures and slides may not always be helpful. One thing worth mentioning is that even though the final was made online and consisted of 100 T/F questions that she claimed to be 'significantly simplified', the median score was still lower than the midterm and I personally thought some of those questions were trickier than multiple choices. I know that reviews on Bruinwalk might be biased, like mine and the one who scored an A+, but most of my friends who have taken Ankowski's courses left extremely bad impressions on her. In my opinion, she's just trying everything possible to kill your GPA.
Professor Ankowsi is an absolute angel. She is one of the best lecturers I've had and considering this was an 8 AM class it made a huge difference. She is clear and engaging in the concepts she explains. The class is very straightforward and I could not recommend is more. 2 paper assignments, fairly simple, just had to formulate a paragraph response to 4 distinct questions pertaining to analyzing some outside material and related to cognitive development. The exams are pretty straight forward in my opinion. I just listened closely to the lectures and took diligent notes and I got an A on both exams. Of course it helps to read the textbook if you're confused but I found it to be time consuming and not worth it as long as you pay attention to every word Ankowski says (the slides posted aren't enough).
Great class! Lab assignments were bit of a pain, but I felt very prepared for the exams!
I entered this class prepared for the worst but it honestly wasn't bad. There is 1 midterm and 1 final and they are both online, synchronous, and open note. Lectures are recorded on Bruin Cast. Prof Anowski also offered extra credit which I would 100% recommend doing. It was just 1 SONA study and a short writing assignment. There is a required textbook but I wouldn't recommend wasting your time reading it unless you are really struggling with the material and need clarification (the chapters are pretty long). Lab is optional and I would only recommend going if you need additional clarification on course material. The activities we did in lab were helpful for learning but were quire redundant if you already are familiar with the concepts being taught. The first exam was pretty straightforward but the final was significantly more difficult. Note: spend LOTS of time reviewing main and simple effects when they are taught during the second half of the course if you are having trouble understanding them, because this class focused heavily on them. Overall the class was manageable but not necessarily an easy A. Keep up with lectures, go to lab if you feel that you need extra clarification, complete the weekly homework on time, study at least a few days in advance for the exams, and DO THE EXTRA CREDIT and you should be totally fine.
I ended the class with an A, but just BARELY over the A- threshold, so luckily my GPA didn't suffer. Thank god for the extra credit assignments Ankowski has for us! DO THE EXTRA CREDIT!!!
The class has weekly ALMs due every Sunday 11:59pm that can sometimes be lengthy but are quite easy.
Additionally, we have Labs every week and each Lab assignment is due the day of one's Lab 10 mins after the Lab's start time. Labs are mostly easy, but sometimes can be time-consuming in order to impress the TA and get a perfect grade.
The lectures were online and at 8a.m. so, naturally, I watched them on my own time so that I could be more focused and attentive, as I was often too tired to absorb the information in-person so early in the morning.
The exams honestly seemed easy in the moment, but often the grades did not reflect that. I got an A on the first exam and a B- on the second exam lol, but because of the extra credit (and good/perfect scores on the ALMs and Labs) I kept an A in the class. I often felt as though neither the ALMs, Labs, nor lectures did a good job of preparing us for the exams. The exams were often wordier, more complex, and more confusing than our practice ones.
Either way, do the extra credit, put in effort for Labs, and do the ALMs -- you'll do fine. Also, haha, the actual content of the class is pretty interesting. I never knew how much of the "scientific" studies we hear about through the media are actually quasi-experimental studies (even developmental Psych is mostly quasi-experimental!). Also, the professor is lovely and I really recommend Yiping Wang as a TA too, she was a great help!
This class was pretty interesting for an 8am! Professor Ankowski is friendly and clear as she takes you through each little field of psychology. Do know that there are two group studies you must do (correlational and experimental), so make sure your group members are good at communication and getting everything in on time. There's one midterm (in-person, closed notes) and a final. Everything is more or less memorization-based except for the article analyses and the labs. I got an 82.8% on the midterm and a 95 on the final -- grind those test banks that she'll provide you right before the final. The final consists of very specific details from the labs, case studies, and papers that you are required to read, so memorize those stats too. In all, this class didn't take too much mental effort (I definitely was not paying attention to half of the lectures). If you put in a decent amount of effort, you'll be fine.
Dr. Anowski was a great professor! She basically just follows her slides but she has great energy and keeps it as engaging as possible for an introductory class. She uses a lot of examples to make the information clear which was really helpful. This class also had a ton of office hours so I always felt like I could get help easily when needed. The assignments and tests were manageable and super similar to the content learned in class. As long as you pay attention, you should be fine!
I really like this professor. She seems very down to earth and very reasonable. She also makes a 2 hour lecture as engaging as it can be and gives us a break everyday. All of the lectures are recorded on bruin cast and only 3 of the 20 are mandatory for the group work. You have to pick a group to work with, but it is only for a few labs. The rest of the work is independent and fairly easy to do. If you go to the lectures and pay attention, you will know all of the information. There is a textbook offered, but you don't need it and it is free anyways.
I would easily take this again, top 3 classes I've taken here. She's very funny and wants us to do well. There are two dates to take each exam and she gives you the highest score. She deletes questions which less than half the class got wrong. No written essays, just weekly short and easy written assignments. So easy and genuinely fascinating and easy. She gives extra credit through iClicker which is an online poll system we use during lecture to respond (does cost money but worth it). Amazing class, DONT HESITATE TO TAKE HER.
Good class overall. Prof lectures off the slides but very clearly and organized. She is willing to help if you have questions too. Group projects are prevalent and quarter-long, so find a good group. Weekly quizzes are relevant info and multiple choice. Midterm was online and multiple choice, easy, but final was very difficult -- in person, paper pencil, and cumulative.
