watch out for the weekly online quizzes. prelabs and postlabs are a drag. you will also get miserably low yields (weigh your crude product before you do any recrystallization or purification) you will understand what im saying when you take the class. Also the final is based off of the final exam booklet that comes with the readers for the class. so do the final exam booklet. The final is a very big part of the grade. Selling lab reports from winter 2013 and all associated materials. *************
Chem 30BL is mostly an individual effort. You can't really complain about Bacher. His lectures really clear up the procedures for each lab, and he goes through all the reasons behind each step. So go to lecture every week. Labs are challenging but you get used to them. Do well on the lab quizzes and try not to screw up elsewhere. Most importantly, do very well on the final. This means do every single practice final he gives, understand completely why each answer is there, and look through the solutions to his old exams since the problems aren't there. If you are weak at IR, do as many of his old IR assignments as possible. Yes this is only a 3 unit class and you will be bitching all the time, but it is very possible to earn that A. Plus about 20% of the class get A's, so ignore the misleading distributions to the right of this paragraph.
Good luck.
Dr. Bacher is one of the best professors in the Department. He really cares about his students and the material. All exams are fair and his grading scheme actually works in your favor.
If you attend office hours and think before you ask questions, he will o his best to help you. He is very flexible in meeting you.
Study the exam reader and youll pass the class.
there is no doubt that this professor is very knowledgeable of this course since he has been teaching this course for many years. However, his accent is unbearable. It is very hard to understand him, so I mainly went to my TA for help. To get an A in this class, do the practice exam booklet because it is very similar to the final exam.
Yes, Prof. Bacher is tough, and I doubt I'll get a very good grade in his class (this was written after the Fall 2001 final but before the grades were posted). But he was a great teacher none-the-less. He was always available even during non office hours. I got the sense that he really wanted me to understand what was going on in lab. After one week, he knew my name and was always making some attempt to strike up a conversation. Anyways, my point is that he is what professors should be: friendly and concerned while making students really work for an A. The whiney losers who rate professors based on the grade they get are the reason uclaprofessors.com isn't as relieable as it should be.
