Bruv this class SLAPS. No honestly one of the most underrated Life Science GEs a UCLA student can take. The grading scheme was equally divided into 20% for all of the following: Participation, Self-monitoring (I'll explain below), Midterm, Final, Final Paper.
This is a class that teaches you to become a better person, whether more productive, more mindful, more appreciative, the list goes on. Every week Professor Korb gives you these "interventions", and you complete them on your own time and then evaluate how you feel on a Google Form. This constitutes the "self-monitoring" grade. Then, at the end of each week, you write up a 1-page log. At the end of the quarter, you'll have a 6-10 page double-spaced paper which is actually not too hard.
As for the lectures, go to them and do the readings! Now, for non-LS majors, neuroscience may sound difficult but the material is actually quite easy and stripped down so don't worry!
I am selling all my comprehensive notes (with each lecture and reading) for $15. My notes contain bolded keywords and concepts and detailed drawings, and they definitely helped me get an A+. Text me at ********** if you're interested.
I really enjoyed this class and the content. My only complaint is that the discussion sections were pretty useless and did not involve discussing the concepts in class. Most of the discussion sections involved learning how to write a hypothesis or other very easy stuff that we learned how to do in middle school. I would have loved it if it involved actual discussion and everyone sharing their thoughts. The discussion groups were way too big as well but there is probably not much they can do about that. The actual lectures were incredibly interesting and Korb is great.
I enjoyed this class with Professor Korb. His lectures are straightforward and recorded. I didn't enjoy going to discussion section, but I did have a very nice TA who was helpful. The tests for this class aren't hard especially with the open notes. Every week you have to submit a log about your intervention for the week. These are easy points. There is also a final paper, but it's all information from your previous weeks' logs so it isn't very hard. I didn't read the actual textbook, and I did just fine going to lecture. I would recommend this class as a nice GE to learn about neuroscience.
I took this class during the 2020 pandemic and it was online.
That being said, Dr. Korb is an excellent lecturer (really engaging and entertaining), and the material of this class is very interesting. I definitely recommend this class to anyone, but you'll definitely get something extra out of it if you're going through a hard time (like I was).
Grading is super fair. Distributed between 20% for participation, midterm, final, a paper, and then weekly logs (basically short papers) you turn in.
My only issues with this class are...
A) The tests seem to be much more difficult and precise than the Prof. lets on the lectures. In the lectures, Dr. Korb will use fun examples to demonstrate neuroscience concepts while some of the questions on the tests were ridiculously confusing and technical compared to the material he presented. I got a 70% on the midterm... I legitimately don't remember the last time I got a grade that low on a test (I take easy classes so its not a flex), but I ended up with an A in the class so its all good (study for the final!!!) However this discrepancy could've been an intentional adjustment due to the class being online.
B) While the workload isn't super serious, it isn't particularly light. Remembering to record your "wellbeing" data on a semi-daily basis (effects participation grade) sounds easy but is super easy to forget. Start slipping up and your grade will hurt. Same goes for the weekly "logs" (usually will have to be about a page and half and well thought out). Also this class requires you to constantly change small aspects of your lifestyle (working out, meditating, writing letters to other people etc.), and while you can BS it and just say you did the interventions in your logs even though you didn't, the papers (and the class) go smoother if you actually take the time to do them.
This class is definitely interesting and worthwhile, and probably one of the easier science GE's. As a North Campus major I'd recommend it for sure.
Such a great class! its an easy A, I was just being a bad student at the time lol. weekly homework consists of readings and then little experiments you do with yourself and then you write up an analysis of it. you learn about all the positive effects of physical and mental exercises and pretty much most of what you learn you can apply to your real life. I recommend this class to everyone! You do not have to be a science person whatsoever. Dr Korb is also hilarious and a great lecturer; we use the book he wrote for the class.
I'm sure anyone reading the reviews of this class has already been told it is super easy, so let me give you the most recent rundown of this class.
Structure:
Participation (literally just showing up to discussion) - 20%
Daily logging (literally completing daily questionnaire about yourself) - 10%
Weekly log (1 page write up about results found in daily logs) - 10%
Final Paper (A bigger weekly log, you can literally copy and paste) - 20%
Midterm - 20%
Final - 20%
Class:
PSA PLEASE READ THIS: the midterm and final are no longer open note. I took this class and went into the midterm thinking it was very easy, so I did not study, and it definitely caught me off-guard. However, if I was prepared, like I was for the final, I would have done much better. This class is a bit more work than it seems on Bruinwalk, however, all of the work is either very easy or very interesting. The material covered is super engaging and very easy to learn for the tests. The cheat code to this class is literally just writing down most of what comes out of his mouth onto a notes doc, and then just reviewing that. Overall it is a pretty easy class, just not the cakewalk that Bruinwalk reviews have made it seem.
Professor:
Korb really makes the class. I would take this class every quarter for the rest of my life if Korb was teaching it. He is very funny, super caring, and an all around amazing guy who is teaching this course to help all his students improve their lives. I picked up so many good habits from this class, I have never felt better. The dude is actually so awesome and will be a ray of sunshine during lecture days.
Please take this class, but understand it is not going to be NO work. I probably spent an hour per week doing stuff for this class, so there is a decent amount of work, and then lectures are recorded so not even a need to go, although going does really help.
I highly highly highly recommend this class as an easy A GE. All the lectures are recorded and the slides are posted online. Your TA provides a new intervention you have to preform each week, such as exercising, practicing gratitude, etc., and you fill out a google survey each day describing your mood on intervention and non-intervention days. Each week you have to write a short and easy paper about the intervention with a prompt provided. There is one midterm and a final that are open note and online. The questions are based on the information in the lectures and the provided readings. The textbook is Professor Korb's book and it felt pretty unnecessary to have. Grades are 20% participation (attending TA sections), 20% weekly logs, 20% daily logs, 20% midterm, 20% final. I did the lowest amount of work possible for this class and still ended with an A, although I do wish I paid more attention because this class is really meant to help benefit you personally. I usually just took notes on the slides at home instead of going to lecture because lectures always felt so long and slow. If you're looking for an easy science GE definitely take this class!
I really liked this class. The midterm and final were both online, open-note, so in my opinion they were very easy as long as you take good notes during lecture. I didn't mind the weekly interventions, although they did get tiring after a while. The reports were super easy, although you should make sure to clarify with your TA what they are expecting. The professor asks for everyone to buy his book, but you don't really need to because thankfully he goes over everything in lecture.
I would recommend anybody to take this course. The material is extremely useful to your everyday life and very engaging. Professor Korb is great and you can tell he is genuinely passionate about the content. The work load is pretty light but I still felt like I learned a lot because I was interested in the content.
