Professor Courey was, without doubt, the best professor I have had during my time here at UCLA. He is very passionate about teaching, and it shows when he lectures.
He posts the PowerPoints for lectures ahead of time, and there is a quiz that corresponds with almost each PowerPoint. You have unlimited attempts on these quizzes, and to encourage you from guessing your way through these quizzes, he awards you a point of extra credit for each quiz that you get a 9/10 or higher on in under 2 attempts.
His first midterm was pretty hard, and time was extremely limited. However, he realized this, and allowed us to gain back some of the points we missed. Also, he made the second midterm significantly easier, and I think it was because of the feedback he received on the first midterm.
The final was not super easy, but he was very understanding of the circumstances, considering it was during the whole coronavirus frenzy. He made it optional, but if you were to take it, you had ample time to do it. In addition, he allowed us to collaborate on it, and gave us the opportunity to earn 10 points extra credit on it.
We had weekly homework due, but these were graded on effort, and we would go over some of the problems with an LA in our discussion, which clarified the concepts well.
Overall, Professor Courey is a gem, and I would definitely take a class with him if I could!
I took this as a 3 week intensive course online and had read good things about the professor on bruinwalk, unfortunately our class as a whole did not have a great experience with him. All of the practice problems, worksheets, and past exams he gave to past classes were written with certain types of problems that seemed reasonable but the first test came out and it was completely different, a lot of people got F's which was really stressful because he doesn't believe in curves. The only way I was able to end up with a B in this class was by studying 8 hours a day, getting 100% on all pre-class quizzes and participation, and as a class begging him to change things about the final to make it more reasonable. I'm not entirely sure but for this quarter I doubt there were very many A's or B's.
Professor Courey is an extremely kind and caring professor. He genuinely cares for student learning and understanding of concepts. I thought his tests were fair because he provided the necessary study resources through worksheets, lectures and clickers. Courey really deserves the world.
I loved taking Chem 14B with professor Courey!!! I came to this class with a C in 14A with Lavelle and am so glad I changed professors - and finished with an A in this class. Professor Courey makes it very clear what is going to be on his tests, making them very fair. His discussion worksheets are organized in the same way that the tests are - his question asks exactly what he wants as an answer. I would definitely recommend his class to anyone. He offers extra credit and makes learning chemistry actually easier!
Hands down best chem professor ever!!! I learned so much with Prof Courey this quarter and I honestly loved this class. There were quizzes on content multiple times a week, participation points through cold calls (signup to be called on for questions) and weekly muddiest points (online), and weekly worksheets. Definitely go to discussion since the LAs go through at least part of the worksheets then, and office hours are often helpful to finish them up if necessary. Midterms were hard but definitely fair: he loves doing conceptual application, so I found the best way to prepare was to redo the worksheets, review slide content, and use the practice exams he gives out. Piazza (question board) was super helpful in asking/answering questions quickly.
DR. COUREY IS THE BEST PROFESSOR AT UCLA. He is the best Chem professor I have ever had and I genuinely LEARNED SO MUCH from his lectures!!! he is so kind and patient and willing to help you and literally the best person. He cares so much about his students. take this class with him if you can, I literally am so sad I won't have Courey again for all my other Chem classes. he is the best <3
COUREY IS THE BEST CHEM PROFESSOR AT UCLA! I took Chem 14A with Lavelle, so coming to Courey for Chem14B was literally heaven on earth. I actually learned chemistry AND I was not stressed out while doing so. Courey does a phenomenal job of making this course relevant to Life Science majors, for his lectures are always full of interesting and relevant biological applications of course content. He is so kind and truly concerned about his students. Take his class!
