I wouldn't normally leave reviews. Professor Garfinkel is an exception.
Everytime I walked inside the lecture halls of La Kretz 110, I would feel an energy that can only be described as "meditative". All the students would be meditating, flipping through their notebooks in preparation of the course. An energy, that is quite different from the dullness and sleep that characterizes chemistry classes, or the Math 31A courses (trust me, I've been there). Everyone was anxious, yet excited for the arrival of "The Garfinkel". No one's talking about that new movie that came out, or what they did at the beach on Saturday. They're talking about chaos theory and matrices.
Once Garfinkel arrives, all flipping of notebooks ceases, and all sounds halt. Eyes are focused, and ears are calibrated. Some choose to record this sermon on their iPhones. Others bring dedicated recorders. Sleepers? Zero. No one sleeps in the lecture halls of Garfinkel.
When one listens to the lectures of Professor Garfinkel, they will instantly understand why such an anomaly arises in the room- the Professor is simply radiating and overflowing with charisma and authority. His words penetrate the barriers of sloth and inattentiveness and murder boredom. The lectures are frickin' 2 hours at 4 in the afternoon, for Christ's sake- it's amazing how there are no sleepers, right? Wrong. lt's obvious why there are no sleepers. The students know, that one second lost of his word is a loss of an educational experience. A mystical, intellectual trek, if you will.
In lecture, it's almost as if I'm suddenly transported to an alternate world where everyone wants to learn and be inspired. Oh wait, I'm in college. This is to be expected, no? Then why haven't I received such inspiration from previous courses? No idea. What makes these students different? The professor. The professor invokes these responses in the students. The students WANT to learn. The students are hungry for the knowledge. They would shut any frat girl who talks about their boyfriend dumping her the past weekend up in an instant.
Professor Garfinkel is absolutely brilliant. A genius. He may make mistakes on the board, but that's on purpose. He engages the class by allowing us to point out those mistakes. He thanks us for pointing out those mistakes. A coincidence? I think not. It's a double-plan to further develop growing minds.
Teaching assistants? Jane was awesome. Her office hours were always full, so I would just stop by her office in botany and leave. I heard she taught LS30A this quarter (summer) and she was amazing. You should take her class. Professor Conley is also amazing. You should take his class. No wait, take Jane's class. No wait, Conley's class. Well, you're in a pickle aren't you? Well, no worries. You can always enroll in the other one as an auditor.
I loved this class. There's no question about it. You need to take this class. I don't care if you're a premed, an engineer, an artist, or a historian. You need some inspiration. You need to see what a true professor is like. You need Jesus (Garfinkel).
