The LS30 series is wayyy better than the Math 3 Series. In the LS series, you actually see how math is applied in aspects of the real world, such as medicine, biology, physiology, etc. I took 30 A and B with Garfinkel and he was great for both classes. I think that his office hours really, really help understand the material, and I recommend going to the test bank and getting previous exams. Overall, the class was not too much work, easy to follow, informative, and enjoyable.

to the student who complained about the disorganization and general incompetencies of LS30B last quarter, this pales in comparison to the incredible amount of effort that Dr. Garfinkel and the TAs put in to create practice materials + access to numerous other resources in order to aid w/ homework and prepare us for the exams, neither of which were difficult given enough effort and time. it is highly unusual that courses provide this kind of support, so it’s almost laughable that people whine about it. The class itself covered a wide range of v interesting, applicable topics and at times seemed overwhelming, probably because *surprise surprise* it's a premedical requisite and a relatively new class. If you pay attention, read the book, and go to office hours at least once (aka do the bare minimum), you'll catch on. I can say about Alan what others have repeated in his pages and pages of hero worship and adoration, or you can read them yourself (they're really funny), ask yourself why presumably reasonable, level-headed ucla students go gaga over this man, and use your own judgement because you and I both know there wouldn't be this many stellar reviews if there wasn't some truth behind it. im gonna hate myself later saying this, but this man is a cardiologist with a heart of gold ! I never particularly cared for math, nor could I ever see myself writing reviews about anything or anyone related to it, so maybe this gives you a little idea of the strange power behind this class and the person who invented it. the nerdiest (ex. eigenvalues ?? ) concepts are broken down to a level easy enough to comprehend with a pleasant, unexpected bonus of actual intellectual curiousity . bottom line ?take this class if you need it, take it if you don't need it, shit, take it if you don't even go here. peace

I took LS30A with Garfinkel and loved it, so I enrolled in LS30B with him thinking it was going to be just as great, it wasn't. LS30B was very disorganized. They tried so hard to make it an organized class and just failed completely. His lectures got worse, as in he would teach something without knowing what he was going to say about it; there were so many mistakes! The first midterm was terrible; it was as if we were taking a Phy Sci class and not a math class. The second midterm was way better, and the reason for that is because one of the TAs help him write it! The final exam was very good, but he had to make it that good because he screwed us all over for the final in LS30A and needed to make up for it. The homework tended to be a lot. Were usually given a week to do it, yet they decided to post it 3-4 days before it was due AND did not give very good help on the discussion forum.

I do think the LS30 series is a good series to take; I was just a bit disappointed at the way it was taught for 30B.
P.S. If possible, try to take the class with TA Ali or Lavanya and avoid Kiara at all costs.

One of the best decisions I could've ever made upon entering UCLA is doing the LS30 series. I never thought I would gain an understanding and genuine appreciation for math but here we are :)
I love this course because I wanted to apply math in real life situations and this course is perfect for it. If you like application of science/math or just want to learn more about math in a different way I guess, I recommend this class. I love this class so much it breaks my heart to not continue the series :'(
**Warning: Just like with every other class, the LS30 series does require effort and dedication. I don't know if it is an "easy A" because I can't compare it with other math classes since I have not taken any others but nevertheless, your grade is a reflection of the time and effort you put into it.
Professor Garfinkel is an awesome professor. He is a genius. SERIOUSLY. A GENIUS. He is very open to his students and very helpful. He purposely stays a couple minutes after lecture to answer questions and he has office hours twice every week. He is an awesome professor!!!
