This class was amazing in my opinion. It was Professor Tinnin's first quarter teaching a class at UCLA but she did a great job. The class consisted of 5 participation assignments (15%), 3 quizzes of which only the top two scores would contribute to the final grade (25%), midterm (30%), and final research paper of 8-10 pages in length (30%). There was no discussion section which was a plus for me.
Take this class! Professor Tinnin is amazing, really makes time for her students and our concerns, and hosts a lot of office hours. The course content is super interesting, and she mixes it up with lecture slides/videos. The textbook has a lot of primary sources which I enjoyed. Course graders can be tough for quizzes (you're given 24 hrs) but Tinnin will go over it with you and sometimes add points back.
If for no other reason, take this as a contemporary history course. Your final research paper (8-10 pgs) can be on whatever suburb you want, may as well learn about your home area's history.
Professor Tinnin is one of the best professors I've had at UCLA thus far. She's funny, extremely engaging, clear, concise, and kind. This is in the midst of Covid so the course is structured differently but we were graded for 3 quizzes, a Midterm, and a Final Research Paper. The quizzes are fairly easy as long as you study the notes and the textbook materials. The Final takes effort but if you're willing to do solid research and find exceptional sources then you should do well on it. She makes an effort to answer all questions during class time and she'll happily make an office hours appointment with you. She also cracks jokes during class. She's definitely a fantastic lecturer.
