This class is a nice break from traditional coursework and Professor Kaushal is a kind teacher with both hilarious and inspirational stories. You need a pte number to enroll which you can get by emailing him (just google search him and its the hotmail one). Don't be scared by the 3 hour blocks on the enrollment listing, the professor actually splits class up into 1 hour 2 days and you can work out what times you'll join with him. You don't need any experience but I've found that my dance background has helped since I'm used to memorizing movement patterns. The midterm and final are both memorizing a composition he teaches and playing it, super stress free. 90 minutes of practice other than class are required a week but you can make up missed hours the next week. So far I took his lower div tabla class and I'm taking the upper div next quarter.
He's an amazing person. He met George Harrison and is an extremely talented Tabla player. I learned a lot in this class and was actually pretty fun.
He only requires 1hr 30 min practices a week (which you need if you want to do well on the midterm and final) and 50 min sessions once a week for class. The midterm and final consisted of playing a piece that he gives us, it's not that long and it's pretty easy because there are a lot of repeats, as well as a vocab section for the final (it's only like 7 words very easy).
He's sarcastic sometimes but you can tell he's a genuine, talented man. He even gets to know everyone's names really quickly. Would recommend this class. It's only 2-units but it's a good experience and you'll get an A if you just play the pieces and show up to class
I love this class and this professor!! He is so kind and funny. I instantly felt comfortable talking to him about anything! This class is an opportunity at UCLA you just do NOT want to miss, no matter what major you are or what level of music education. It is such a fun class in which you have the opportunity to learn about a culture and take a break from your other classes.
Grading is very easy as long as you memorize the pieces and he gives out A's easily as long as you're not the type to fall asleep or anything rude like that. I recommend this class for everybody!
