Contrary to some of the comments below. Professor Lopez is one of the best professors at UCLA. Here are the reasons why: 1. In general, his lectures are extremely organized with concise powerpoint presentations helping students to better understand the course material. I consider him one of the best lecturers at UCLA. 2. His lectures are entertaining, especially in Sociology 186 (Latin American Societies) with funny side commentaries. 3. The amount of work assigned is reasonable. The grading is not too difficult. As long as you put effort in the class, you will at least earn a B+. 4. He is a very nice person. He is approachable, relaxed and extremely understanding of students. He does not get upset when students don't participate or pay attention in class. I feel bad for him that the quality of some students are not very good despite his effort and the interesting class content. I don't know why some people gave him a bad review. But, I would highly recommend Professor Lopez to anyone who is willing to learn and put forth the effort.

Professor Telles is a great professor although he may not be the most engaging. The material he presents in class about race and ethnicity is very interesting. There are a couple of books assigned that are to be read entirely but its manageable and they focus on other latin american countries he does not discuss in class since he mainly concentrates on Brazil in lecture. There are also a couple of films that are shown in class. The midterm and the final are not difficult if one attends lecture and discussion sections and do the readings. The TA is extremely helpful especially when you dont understand a concept in lecture or in the readings. Overall I think the course was valuable because I found out so much about different countries in latin america and how they differ in terms of their race relations.
