Description: Lecture, three hours; discussion, one hour. Studies of past, present, and future trends in population growth. Sociological theories of causes and consequences of population growth and redistribution. Emphasis on correlates of fertility, mortality, and migration. P/NP or letter grading.

Professor Bailey is a lovely teacher. He has graeat stories and funny tales he tells throughout his lectures that make them fun. The material is very interesting too! I didn't expect it to me, but I found myself truly engaged. He tells you exactly what he expects. He's very precise about what will be on tests and if you study and come to lecture, you will get a very good grade. Take him! He's a sweetheart!

Professor Bianchi is very intelligent but still makes an effort to be fun & relatable. I took Social Demography to satisfy one of the core requirements for Soc and was very glad I did. The topics were surprisingly very interesting--such as age pyramids in different countries, infant mortality/death rates, race/gender, etc. The course involved doing some data analysis on the U.S. Census website for short papers & a longer final paper, but it was easy to learn. I appreciated having this experience because I feel that data analysis is a transferable skill that looks good when applying to a variety of jobs. Professor Bianchi was very helpful in office hours and helped me do very well on my final paper. She claims to be a harsh grader but I think she just wants to challenge us because I did very well and found the course to be easy & interesting.

Professor Campbell's lecturing style at times can put some straight to sleep.Her tries to make the material of interest to students. He lectures from from slides. He provides more in depth information than the slide alone would convey, so attend lecture and take note. If you can I'd suggest printing the slides before class in hand-out form and take notes directly on them, or just use your laptop and open up the slide and take note in the note section of the pp. document and save it. The assignments he gave weren't that bad, they were easy to follow with steps written out for you so if you got lost you could ask for help at that point, and he's very willing to help you understand what you're doing, but he'll ask you first if you know what you're doing to see if you've been coming to class, but he helps you. Nice guy to talk to if you're having trouble in the class. He takes attendance about 15 times out of the whole quarter, and he put the information into the computer himself. There was no required section, but the TA was available for office hours if you needed her. In short just do the readings, attend lecture and ask questions when you're lost. The final paper is easy step by step, and there was an in class final which was multiple choice open book and open note. Grade:B+
