Fall 2015 - Selling: -This Book Is Not Required ($10) -Course Reader ($30) Email me for details! ************* Don't take this GE unless you plan on pulling all nighters. She was a good professor, she made me interested in the topic and she knew what she was talking about. Very monotone though and that bored me. She had funny moments though. The workload was SO BAD. I stayed up so late doing her readings for the pop quizes and still failed them. Its an easy class, just a LOT of work. I had a good TA and discussion so that made me want to learn more about sociology. But Prof. Anderson isnt very helpful. She gives take home essays vs in class finals so that is nice. Grading is based on 2 essays, participation, attendance, and pop quizes. The pop quizes can really screw your grade over so naturally you want to do good, but that means reading about 200 pages a night, and soon the material gets repetitive. Selling: This

Took Soc 1 with Professor Black. She is a decent lecturer and always uses film clips and youtube videos to engage her students and to help them apply new concepts. I thought this class was beyond easy, even for a North campus class... Yes, you do have to do the readings for discussion but they're important for the tests. The multiple choice part of the midterm was really easy. Overall she's decent and seems pretty friendly.

Spring 2024 - Brubaker is a great professor, just don't take this class if you're taking it as an easy GE. I took it because it is a requirement for soc majors and I got a 99% even though I was stressing the whole quarter after he told us the class tends to be a B average. You definitely do have to put in some work for this class to get an A but it really is nothing crazy if you understand the material. You NEED to pay attention in lecture and do the readings, however, or it will become too much to catch up on before tests. This class is not a super easy A but it is really nothing crazy. The class is genuinely very interesting and I learned a lot, and you can tell Brubaker is very passionate about what he teaches.

Summer 2020 - Professor Calderon is one of the chillest professors I have ever encountered. He is really receptive to accommodation requests and goes above and beyond to make sure students are not swamped with work and learn the information. Because he is more concerned about students learning, the course is not that hard. I took this class during quarantine and the work was this: Weekly Reflection Paper ~ 1.5 pages graded fairly easily as long as you write more than 1 page Weekly Quizzes 6MC / 2SA~ Very easy if you watch lecture, some readings are needed on the quizzes Final: 3-5 page paper on determining your own social location Professor Calderon offered extra credit which was very easy to finish. Honestly very easy class which made it very easy to focus on actually learning the material. His lectures were really interesting and actually covered things that were directly applicable to the world right now. If you have the chance to take this class with this professor, DO IT.

Fall 2020 - I don't know why everyone gave such a high rating for this class. I personally think the workload for this class is not light. We have 3-4 short lectures, about 50+ pages of reading, 2-3 reading quizzes, 2 discussion posts, and sometimes an essay homework EACH WEEK. This is a lot. Also, the reading quizzed are timed to be 5 mins, so even if she says "open book quizzes", there is absolutely no time for you to search through the book. The exams are also somewhat hard. Also, if you are someone that is a little socially awkward, this class has many group discussions and group homework that makes you super awkward. Anyways, the professor is clear in her lectures, but I just don't like this class overall.

Summer 2021 - Took this virtually over the summer and I think the content itself is pretty interesting but I'm not a huge fan of how the class is weighted. I don't know if other students felt the same but your entire grade is based on 5 things essentially: 3 discussion posts (30%), midterm (30%), and final (40%). That leaves very little room for error and kinda sucks in the earlier weeks when you're not sure what the expectations are/still adjusting to the class. I've taken other asynchronous classes before and there are usually more opportunities to earn points which I would've liked. I felt that the exams were always a little bit confusing too. They were like 20-30 multiple choice and had 1 short answer. The multiple choice portions would have like 4 options that all sounded very similar and were in the style of: a) ethnicity b) ethnicity AND race c) ethnicity, race AND identity d) culture e) all of the above. I don't know about anyone else but I kinda hate these and there's a lot of overthinking that happens. Otherwise, the professor is really nice and passionate about the content.
