Philosophy of Poetry in Context of South Asia

Description: Seminar, one hour. Focus on how poems are able to convey emotion, why poets use restrictive forms and meters, and what characterizes aesthetic experience. Consideration of these questions, rooted in philosophy of poetry, using theories from South Asian and Western aesthetics. Theoretic learning is grounded in exploration of Urdu Ghazal, through which students gain experience aesthetically analyzing works of poetry. P/NP grading.
